Mingulay Boat Song

RNLI 200 Years saving lives

[Chorus] Heave a ho, boys! Let her go, boys!
Swing her head round, and all together.
Heave a ho, boys! Let her go, boys,
Sailing homeward to Mingulay.

What care we though, white the Minch is?
What care we for wind or weather?
Pull her round, boys, every inch is
Heading homeward to Mingulay.
Heave a ho, boys! Let her go, boys…

Wives are waiting at the pier head,
looking seaward from the heather;
Bring her ’round, boys, then we’ll anchor
‘ere the sun sets on Mingulay.
Heave a ho, boys! Let her go, boys…

Ships return now, heavy laden,
Mothers holding bairns a-crying.
Let her go boys, and we’ll anchor
‘Ere the sun sets on Mingulay.

Heave a ho, boys! Let her go, boys…

Heave a ho, boys! Let her go, boys!
Swing her head round, into the weather.
Heave a ho, boys! Let her go, boys,
Sailing homeward to Mingulay.
Sailing homeward to Mingulay.

As Sung by the Corries

Some slightly different phrasing…

Oh Shenandoah

Oh Shenandoah
I long to hear you
Away you rolling river
Oh Shenandoah
I long to hear you
Away I’m bound away
‘Cross the wide Missouri

Oh Shenandoah
I love your daughter
Away you rolling river
Oh Shenandoah
I love your daughter
Away I’m bound away
‘Cross the wide Missouri

Oh Shenandoah
I’m bound to leave you
Away you rolling river
Oh Shenandoah
I’ll not deceive you
Away I’m bound away
‘Cross the wide Missouri
