Senior and Youth Football in West Bergholt

Senior and Youth Football in West Bergholt

The village has two football clubs, both catering for juniors, one exclusively so:

West Bergholt Football ClubWest Bergholt Football Club (“The Brewers”)

West Bergholt has hosted football since as far back as 1892 and officially joined the County Football Association, Division 2 in 1909. Nicknamed “the Brewers” after the local Daniell & Sons Brewery, where the team was originally formed. The Brewery may have gone but West Bergholt Football Club continues to survive with the current club forming in 1938/39 joining the Brightlingsea & District League.

Bergholt Heath YFC was formed in 1999 to provide an opportunity for the youth of West Bergholt to play football. In recent years, the club, which is affiliated to the Essex FA and is awarded the FA Charter Standard, has grown significantly in size.

Welcoming Club

We are a welcoming club, keen to support all children in enjoying their football, improving and playing in the right way. We are proud that over the past few seasons we have added girls teams to those we are able to offer, and this is something we are keen to grow further. Many of the children that play within the club live in the village or attend Heathlands Primary School, but those that live outside West Bergholt are more than welcome as well.

Teams

This season, 2024/25, we have 14 teams playing from Under 7 through to Under 13. Our girls teams play in the Essex County Girls League, while the remainder of our teams (which are predominantly boys teams with some girls playing) play in the Colchester and District Youth League. Many of our teams continue to train and play matches within the village, most at the Poors Field, our home ground, or at the Lorkin Daniell Field for those playing 11 a side football. Our continued growth means that some teams also now train at Holmwood House School, with other venues likely to be added in the coming years as our growth continues.

Other Opportunities to Play

In addition to those teams playing organised football through leagues, we offer two additional training sessions. Our ‘academy’ training sessions are for any children in EYFS or Year 1 that are keen to be active, make friends and start learning how to play football. Since starting these sessions 8 years ago, they have grown and become a great success, with 40-50 children often attending on a Saturday morning, and many of those then going on to play for the club at Under 7 and beyond.

This season we have also started girls only training for those in Year 2 and 3, with a view to them then forming a girls team to play in the Essex Girls League. These sessions are focussed on the girls enjoying their football while learning more about how to play the game. This team have named themselves the BHYFC Phoenix, and are doing incredibly well.
