Food & Waste

Waste in General

Food waste

Essex County Council has lots of advice on their Love Essex website detailing food and regular waste in the local area.

Colchester County Council has a guide to reducing waste as well as details of their own recycling and waste collections, so that we can all be sure we are putting the correct items in the right bins.

Food Waste

Love Food, Hate Waste

Food Cycle has some simple ideas to reduce food wastage in the UK:

  • Buy and cook only what you need.
  • Don’t throw away leftovers right away. Get creative. BBC Good Food has an entire page dedicated to this topic. Also try some of the top Chefs who have some interesting suggestions too, such as Jamie Oliver.
  • Organise food at home.

Love Food Hate Waste has many practical guides to planning meals, shopping and taking control of your kitchen.

Repairs

Repair Shops or Shed Men are a great idea, using skills of people in the village to repair or repurpose broken items as well as reducing isolation & loneliness amongst men, especially those of retirement age. The Essex Shed Network have more details and we would love to hear from you if you are interested in starting an initiative like this. (Email Laura on [email protected]).

Locally, we are lucky to have Re-cycle just up Colchester Road on the way to Wormingford, where residents can volunteer to repair, donate or buy unwanted bicycles.
