October Fashion Show Attracts over 90

October's meeting was with Edinburgh Woollen Mill fashion showOctober’s WI meeting was an ‘Open Evening’ with the president, Susan Leng, welcoming numerous Womens’ Institutes from the surrounding area.

Many visitors attended forming an audience with our WI of just over ninety ladies.  The fashion show was from Colchester’s Edinburgh Woollen Mill with ten West Bergholt members modelling the Autumn collection which included the makes of Honor Milburn, Country Rose, Isle and EWM.

Each model wore three different sets of garments from skirts and jumpers to jackets and gilets. Our secretary gave the commentary detailing which collection and prices.

Following the show two large rails were wheeled out so everyone could have a closer look.  The guests enjoyed home made refreshments and the evening ended with a grand raffle.  A very successful event.

New baby?

NE Essex CCG issue news of maternity services surveyThe NE Essex CCG, which is responsible for planning and buying local healthcare services for the Colchester and Tendring areas of Essex, is always keen to obtain feedback from users of NHS Healthcare services in their area.  They are now asking recent parents in North East Essex to help with a local survey about maternity services.  They have issued the following:

If you or your partner has given birth recently – how was your experience of pregnancy and birthing services?

North East Essex MSLC (Maternity Services Liaison Committee) wants to hear from recent parents about their experience of having a baby in Colchester, Clacton or Harwich hospitals or at home. Please help us by responding to the online survey at:

… or go to the news section of the CCG website at www.neessexccg.nhs.uk

This news release is issued on behalf of the MSLC, which is made up of local parents and health professionals and advises the local NHS about the care they provide to women, their partners and their babies during pregnancy, birth and in the weeks after the baby’s arrival. Their role is to help the NHS listen to and take account of the views and experiences of people who use their maternity services. The MSLC is hoping for a significant number of responses by the end of July.

Best place to have a stroke

NE Essex CCG issue news of speedier hearing aid serviceThe local NHS CCG has issued the following news update reporting on the success rate of Colchester General Hospital, which has one of the largest stroke units in the East of England, with stroke patients, admitting over 70% of patients within 4 hours compared to the national average of below 60%:

Local stroke patients get best care in country, latest figures show

The quality of stroke care coordinated locally by Colchester Hospital is again in the top two hospital trusts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, according to the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). This makes us the best over the last six months, nowhere else having been in the top two consistently.

The RCP clinical audit of stroke patients who were admitted to hospital in the three months from October last year shows Colchester was the second best-performing out of the 175 hospital trusts that admit stroke patients directly for acute stroke care. Dr Shane Gordon, Clinical Chief Officer at NHS NE Essex CCG said:

This result is a credit to several organisations, including voluntary organisations who work together to provide not only emergency and acute care at the hospital, but also vital recovery care in the community when patients are safe to leave the hospital. Specially-trained nurses from ACE, the NHS community organisation, help patients to recover as much function as they can in the days, weeks and months after a stroke.

The figures show that whereas on average nationally 58% of people who have had a stroke were admitted to a stroke unit within four hours, in NE Essex it is over 70%.  Perhaps most remarkable is that locally over three-quarters of people are helped by the dedicated Early Discharge Team to get quick, dedicated support to go home or to rehabilitation out of the acute hospital, whereas nationally on average just one quarter of patients are helped in this way.

Dr Gordon added:

These figures are the results of a shared determination to get higher standards of care for our patients resulting in less death, disability and better quality of life. But we are very far from having a perfect service, there is much more we can do together to give stroke patients here even better treatment and recovery. Rapid and thorough treatment and recovery for patients can make all the difference to otherwise more serious outcomes for patients and families.

Recently published by the RCP, the audit was welcomed by Dr Ramachandran Sivakumar, consultant stroke physician at Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust and its clinical lead for stroke.

He said the aim of the comparative information is to improve the quality of stroke care by auditing stroke services against evidence-based standards.

Dr Sivakumar said:

Stroke care is very much teamwork and our success is down to a multidisciplinary approach that involves therapy staff, such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and dietitians, besides doctors and nurses.

While these figures show we are performing extremely strongly, we are certain we can do even better and that is what we are focusing on.

Moira Keating, nurse consultant for stroke services, said:

In my opinion, the entire Colchester stroke team takes ownership of each and every patient and pulls out all the stops to ensure that patients receive the best possible care and achieve their goals.

December – Magic Marvo

December saw the Women’s Institute’s Christmas meeting.  The president, Susan Leng,   presented a voucher to Marie Louise Fuell who was the 2013 winner of our monthly competition, Hillary Nugent and Manya Barrow were runners up.

The evening continued with a supper provided by the members.   Magic Marvo, a magician, entertained with everyone puzzled  by his clever tricks. The grand raffle enabled everyone to receive a prize.

Later in the month member, Manya Barrow, invited the W I to her house for mulled wine and mince pies with entertainment and Christmas carols which everyone joined in. A convivial afternoon to end the W I year.

January  – Desert Island Discs

In January the vice-president,  Bea Girkin,  welcomed several new members and a guest.  There was no speaker so members brought C D’s to play for  ‘Desert Island Discs’ and talked about the reason for their choice. The president was back in the chair and pleased to see so many new members.  Gary Egerton a blue badge London Guide made a welcome return visit with his talk on Strange and Unknown Facts about London.  Our social time was enjoyed by everyone with slides by the president showing all our varied activities during 2013.

Local Bus user – have your say!

Local bus in West BergholtIt’s not too late to have your say on the future of supported local bus services.

As you may be aware, in September the County Council began a major review of its support for local bus services in the County.   The public consultation seeks residents’ and passenger transport customers’ views on local bus services which are supported by the County Council, and their preferences and needs for services in the future.

The consultation has now been ‘live’ for 7 weeks. It’s clear that people care about the future of their individual bus services, however, the Council would like to encourage as many people as possible to take this opportunity to contribute towards the future of local bus services.  It is important the Council has a high level of response from the public so that decisions are made on robust evidence.

The consultation can be accessed online until 9 December 2013.  Paper copies of the consultation are also be available through libraries or by calling 0845 603 7631.

Potholes – update from Borough Councillors

Essex Council's problem reporting page - report, check progress or find previously reported problems here
Essex Council’s problem reporting page – report, check progress or find previously reported problems here

Borough Councillors, Marcus Harrington & Dennis Willetts yesterday sent the following to residents of Valley Crescent:

The potholes at the junction of Valley Crescent and Chapel Lane have been a cause of anger and frustration for many months.  Many of you have reported them through the proper on-line method on the Essex County Council website.  Many of you have also reported them to us and we have both been in constant communication with ECC’ s Highways Department about them.

We agree the situation is unacceptable.  Potholes of this dimension cannot be left for such a long time without repair.  We have made our feelings abundantly clear.

As Colchester Borough Councillors we cannot do more than apply pressure.  The responsibility for pothole repair does not lie with our Council.  We have, however, also offered to repair the potholes ourselves but that offer fell on deaf ears.

Finally some hope is on the horizon and this is the reason for writing.  We have been faithfully informed by Essex County Council’s Highways Department that repair of these potholes will be part of a wider programme of road surface repair in West Bergholt which should be completed by the end of March 2013.  We want to let you know of this commitment arid hope you share some hope with us, even though it would take a brave man to put his mortgage on it!

With best wishes,
Cllr Marcus Harrington
Cllr Dennis Willetts

If you are plagued by potholes  (or any of a wide range of Highways problems – see picture above) then don’t forget you can report them directly to Essex County Council’s Highway’s Department using their website.
