BYGging it up for our Youth

After fears that BYG would close after 10 years the following great news has come from the groups AGM last week.

BYG’s AGM took place on Thursday 12th October and it was feared that, after almost 10 years, the Village would see the end of its popular Youth Club as long-serving committee members retired.  The fear was particularly heightened when the start time of the AGM  approached and nobody Continue reading “BYGging it up for our Youth”

Aimed at young people between 10 and 16, BYG has now been meeting regularly for over nine years.  It has clearly met a need with over a hundred members and up to eighty turning up on club evenings.  For most of this time it has been managed, and evenings staffed, by a small group; initially some dedicated adults and latterly Continue reading “Will You Let Bergholt Youth Group Fold?”

Best Village of the Year

Every Year the Rural Community Council of Essex holds a competition to determine the best Village of the Year.  The award is based on the activities and work of the community as a whole, not just the Parish Council:

This is the only competition of its kind in Essex that focuses on the whole community rather than on the work of the Parish Council or one particular organisation or amenity.  We will be looking to reward villages of all sizes that are doing most to enhance the quality of life for their inhabitants.

BYG Needs You!

BYG Needs YouBYG Needs You!

BYG has been running for over 7 years now, growing in popularity during this time. There are currently over 100 registered members in school years 6 to 10 with each Club evening being attended by between 60 and 70 children.

Although the volunteer list has seen many people come and go over the years, it is the same core of adults that still make up both the Club evening “crew” and the management committee. However after 8 years many of this original group are now looking to step aside.

In addition to the adults, most of the Youth crew, who have come up through the membership, are of a similar age.  Some have already been lost to University and over the next 18 months most of the remainder will also depart.

Without an injection of new volunteers – both adult and youth (school year 10 and above), BYG will not be viable and unfortunately will have to close its doors. It is, therefore, necessary to  start planning now.  By the end of this year a new core of volunteers needs to be in place

If you are interested in helping BYG in any way – ad-hoc or more formally by regular attendance at Club evenings or as a new management committee member – please contact Harry Stone on 01206 241026 or by email: [email protected].

Youth Group Organize Family Fun Day

Bergholt Youth Group – BYG – is holding a family fun day at the Orpen Hall and Lorkin Daniel field on Saturday 27th June, from 2-4pm.  There is no entry fee to the event and all family members are welcome to come along and see what the Youth Club provides for children in the village.

As well as having most of the usual Youth Club equipment out for people to try, including the pool and table tennis tables and the various PlayStation, XBox and Wii games etc., BYG will also be running tennis sessions, a penalty shootout competition and some poor unsuspecting soul will be in the stocks ready for target practise with wet sponges!  There will also be afternoon “tea and cake” on sale, in addition to the normal Club tuck shop.

BYG is run every other Friday evening from September through to July for children of school year 6 and above.  It has been running for over 6 years, staffed by volunteers.  BYG currently has around 90 members and the Club evenings are regularly attended by over 50 children.  There will be a Club info table displaying further information and the Club volunteers – “Crew” – will be on hand to answer any questions people may have.
