Orpen Players’ “Death By Fatal Murder”

death-by-fatal-murderOrpen Players’ “Death By Fatal Murder”

Orpen Players are back with another production on 14th – 16th May.  Written by Peter Gordon, this play is the third in the ‘Inspector Pratt’ trilogy of spoofs of the Agatha Christie ‘whodunnit’ genre.

Inspector Pratt’s record of crime detection at Bagshot House is not enviable. In his two previous visits the body count mounted disastrously as he looked on, helpless and hopeless. Now he’s back and, as usual, chaos reigns supreme!

During the course of his latest investigations, Pratt meets the new owner of the house, Nancy Allwright.  Soon he is embroiled in more mystery, aided and abetted by Miss Maple and Constable Thomkins.  Upper-crust Ginny and Italian gigolo, Enzo, help with enquiries but danger soon looms with an unexpected arrival and a frightening suggestion by Welsh busybody and clairvoyant, Blodwyn Morgan.

Plot summary

The Deep Blue Sea begins with the discovery by her neighbours of Hester Collyer who has tried and failed to commit suicide.  Some time before, she left her husband, a respectable High Court Judge, for a semi-alcoholic former RAF pilot, Freddy Page.  The relationship was physical and passionate but his ardour has cooled, leaving her emotionally stranded and desperate.  The aftershocks of her attempted suicide unravel even the remnants of this relationship, but by the end she is brought to a hard decision to live, partly through the intercession of another resident of the tenement house, Mr. Miller, an ex-doctor, struck off for what seems to have been a homosexual offence.  These two outcasts, socially ostracised for their ‘excessive’ loves, find a curious and moving kinship.

An actor, who played Freddy recently had this to say:

It’s a play about love and lust. But also about what it was like to live after the war. Freddy was a Spitfire pilot in World War II. He came out of that a war hero and worked as a test pilot, but lost his nerve and hit the bottle. Before we join the play he’s met Hester and pours his heart out to her at a time when people were very closed up. We join them at the nadir of their relationship.

Deanna Walker BEM

A West Bergholt woman has been recognised in the New Year’s Honours awards for her services to Higher Education.  Deanna Walker has been awarded the BEM (British Empire Medal) for her work at the University of Essex where she is administrator in the Registry Department.  She joined the university staff 25 years ago in the Admissions Department working in several administrative roles before reaching her present position as Senior Academic Officer.  Her work has included mentoring junior colleagues which, she believes, also contributed to colleagues recommending her for the award.

Deanna is modest about her achievements. She says:

The award came out of the blue. When the letter came notifying me, I couldn’t understand why I was chosen as I just do an ordinary working job.

Talking Heads – Orpen Players new production

Alan Bennett's Talking HeadsAlan Bennett sealed his reputation as the master of observation with a series of ground breaking monologues originally filmed for BBC Television. Darkly Comic, tragically poignant and wonderfully uplifting. Talking Heads is widely regarded as a modern classic.

The Orpen Players have transformed Talking Heads from just a monologue to an acting form taking three of Bennett’s plays A Lady of Letters, A Chip in the Sugar and Bed Among the Lentils onto the stage at the Orpen Hall, West Bergholt.

Talking Heads places Alan Bennett in the highest tier of English dramatic writers

New York Times

Bennett’s genius is his ability to satirize humanely, his prose is like stained glass: if you star at it, you see things you missed

New York Times Book Review

It’s hardly a revelation to say that Alan Bennett has proved himself a master of modern dramatic monologue… One of the finest dramatic achievements of the past decades

The Scotsman

Talking Heads is being performed at the Orpen Hall on Thursday 9th, Friday 10th & Saturday 11th may with doors opening at 7:30pm for performance start at 8pm.  Tickets are £6 on Thursday, £7 Friday & Saturday (children £5 all performances) and are available now:
