Uner-10 Match report (by Victoria):
Away to Little Oakley Blues in round One of the League Cup.

We travelled to Little Oakley in increasingly thick fog and couldn’t even see the pitch from the car park!

The game started well for us and we had a flurry of early corners although we never really looked like scoring from them. Mid way through the half some good play between the Sabini brothers resulted in Antonio setting Gianni clear on goal and he rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into the net with his left foot. We had some further chances but failed to put them away, whilst at the other end our defending was not as good as normal and there was some panicky clearances and three good saves by James in goal. A few minutes before half time the referee awarded a free kick to Little Oakley just outside the box. The ball was hit hard and found its way through a crowd of players and into the net for their equaliser.

The second half continued in the same way and the later parts of the first half with the boys looking out of sorts compared to normal. James made another couple of good saves before a quick break from Little Oakley saw a shot hit the post before another player knocked in the rebound. The boys found the Little Oakley keeper was as good as James and just couldn’t find a way past him, whilst at the other end our defence was looking increasingly exposed as we pushed for an equaliser – with James keeping us in the game.

The Final whistle came and the boys came off the pitch very dejected having not been at their best today against a very determined Little Oakley team. Both goalkeepers won their teams ‘Man of the Match’ awards which tells the story of an end-to-end game.

Final result: Little Oakley Blues 2 – 1 Bergholt Heath

Man of the Match: James Holden

Team: J Holden; M James, J Bowden, J Hirst (L Bloomfield), H Dixon (A Marley), A Sabini, G Sabini

Next match Sunday 19th October at home to Marks Tey on the Poors Field, kick off 10am

Under 10 Match Report (by Victoria)

Well, the weather wasn’t exactly perfect today. What I am saying is that it was absolutely awful. There wasn’t a dry period in the match and the ground was squelching with mud. This didn’t hinder the boy’s enthusiasm though and they got to the ground full of spirit as always.

We scored after about eight minutes, after three attempts – all by different players – Aaron eventually finished a chance and the ball was in the back of the net. This was followed by a flurry of shots by the opposition, but our defenders and goalie managed to keep the score at 1-0. Matthew (our goalie) made a spectacular save, tipping the ball over the top of the bar from a free kick. The score remained the same at half time.

Three changes were made at the start of the second half with Jamie, James and Gianni coming on for Luke, Harry and Jake (Luke and Jake both came back on later in the half). After holding our lead comfortably, we conceded our first goal of the season after a wicked deflection wrong- footed Matthew in goal. We soon got back on top, when Antonio made a sprint down the pitch, held off the defender and shot from just inside the box to restore our lead. Both teams were playing well in the conditions and then in the last minute an unlucky mistake by a Sudbury player meant that they scored an own goal and we were 3-1 up. The game ended like this, and we were finally able to get out of the horrid rain, and into the dryness of the car.

Final result: Sudbury AFC 1 – 3 Bergholt Heath U10

Man of the match: Antonio Sabini

Team: M James; H Dixon (J Holden), J Hirst (L Bloomfield), J Adams (G Sabini), A Sabini, L Bloomfield (J Bowden), A Marley (J Adams)

Under 10’s Match Report

The 9-0 result looks a little one sided, but the main damage was done in the first half when the boys passed the ball brilliantly and made scoring look easy against a team that looked a little shell-shocked!   7-0 up at half time courtesy of the Sabini twins. Antonio scored a hat trick including 2 in the first 3 minutes (one from the half way line), and Gianni added a 4th before the others started getting in on the act.  Aaron added one at the near post from a corner and two superb shots from Luke on the left finished off the half.

The second half eased off a little with our passing, which had cut Earls Colne open time again in the first half, drying up a little – maybe the boys all thought they could score from the halfway line! Another from Luke and a deflected own goal (from Luke’s shot), were the sum of the second half scoring. At the other end our goalkeeper had a couple of saves to make including one from a header, but apart from a few corners the whole match was played out in the Earls Colne half. As last week, the oppositions man of the match was their goalkeeper who was responsible for stopping the final score resembling rugby or cricket!

Final score: Bergholt Heath 9 – 0 Earls Colne

Goals: A Sabini x 3, G Sabini, L Bloomfield x 3, A Marley, O.G.

Man of the Match: Antonio Sabini

Team: J Bowden (A Sabini); J Holden, H Dixon, J Adams (G Sabini), G Sabini (A Marley), A Sabini (J Adams), L Bloomfield (J Bowden)

Under 10 Match Report by Victoria
The first match of our new league season kicked off at 10am on a sunny and warm morning – summer had arrived at last!

The teams looked quite evenly matched in the first half, although the Brooklands keeper, who had more to do, was on top form and pulled off a couple of good saves and also showed good awareness and bravery. When we finally did beat him, a defender had sense to cover back and head off the line! Brooklands had their moments too, and James Holden had to be alert in the Bergholt goal to sweep up with some good kicked clearances both inside and outside his box. It was equal at half time with both teams having some good shots and some hasty clearances off the line.

James Hirst and Luke Bloomfield were introduced at the start of the second half and this seemed to perk up our attacking options. James went just wide with a neat turn and shot and Luke was causing the Brooklands defence problems with his close control, but still their keeper looked comfortable and was blocking all goal-bound efforts. At the other end the Bergholt defence looked more and more comfortable as the game wore on. With around 5 minutes of the match remaining and just when it looked like the game would end 0-0, Gianni Sabini swung in a corner from the left and Luke Bloomfield reacted quickly at the near post to touch the ball into the net. Despite a concerted effort by Brooklands to get back on terms in the last few minutes, our goal was rarely troubled thanks to some sensible defending with all the boys doing their bit to close down the
opposition.

Final result: Brooklands 0 – 1 Bergholt Heath U10

Man of the match: Luke Bloomfield (and the Brooklands goalkeeper!)

Team: J Holden; M James, J Bowden, H Dixon (J Hirst), A Sabini, G Sabini, A Marley (L Bloomfield)

Next match Sunday 28th September at home to Earls Colne (Poors field, 10am)

BHYFC – Under 9’s – Stanway Villa Tournament

Our final pre-season tournament took place in Stanway in a special invitation event. This was a mini league with the winners being the team who amassed the most points. We had a poor start losing to the eventual winners Lexden Saints in our first game, not helped by some poor refereeing. Awarding a penalty that looked to us like ‘ball to hand’ and leaving one of our defenders down injured and crying on the edge of his own penalty area, the referee only stopped play once Lexden had taken advantage of the situation by scoring the second and final goal; this was despite players and managers of both teams asking him to stop the game! An apology afterwards by the senior official on duty at the tournament was scant consolation!

The boys picked themselves up for a draw and two wins from their other 3 matches, finishing third in the final table, which was a disappointment having come second this time last year – so no squad photo with medals to show on this occasion!

Now onto the Under 10s league – our last season at mini soccer 7-a-side – with our first match away to Brooklands this coming Sunday 21st September!

BHYFC – Under 9’s – Tiptree Minors 5-a-side

The second of our summer tournaments saw us enter 2 Under 9s teams into the Tiptree 5-a-side tournament.  In 2007 we had entered one team only as a pre-cursor to our first season as Bergholt Heath, and had won the U8s age group. This season, as all the boys were available, we decided to keep them all happy by having 2 squads of 6 – drafting in a couple of extra players to supplement our normal squad of 10.

Luckily the two teams were drawn in separate groups and both managed to get through into the semi finals.  By luck, as both finished second we were also kept apart in the semi finals (winners of each group playing the runners up in the other). The first team lost in their semi final but the second managed to win and ensure we had a Bergholt Heath team in the final for the second year running.  They went on to play the team the others had lost to in their semi final, running out 2-1 winners having gone a goal down, Matthew James scoring the winner!

BHYFC – Under 9’s – Colchester Villa Tourament

This was the first of 3 summer tournaments entered by the team, and was organised by Colchester Villa.  Most of the boys played for Villa at U-8s before we decided to set up a team for this age group within Bergholt Heath – and this was a late invite to replace a team who had dropped out.  The tournament actually took place on the very day we had pencilled in for the start of training! Therefore we set off to Highwoods Sports Centre on Saturday 6th July without too much expectation as the boys had not played together since April.

The tournament included teams from a wider geographical region than the Colchester league, including teams from the Woodbridge, Ipswich and Chelmsford areas. Highlights included our first ever headed goal in competition, scored by Jamie Bowden Vs Wivenhoe ,and James Hirst scoring a wonder goal to win the semi final Vs Springfield, winning the ball on the halfway line before weaving his way past 4 players and coolly slotting the ball into the net with virtually the last kick of the game!

The final against Maldon Town was a tense affair with the boys not surprisingly looking decidedly tired. It finished 0-0, going to a penalty shootout. After the first Maldon penalty had struck the post, Antonio Sabini coolly slotted the ball low into the corner, resulting in joyful celebrations by the players – much to the surprise of the parents who thought this was slightly ‘over the top’ for the first penalty – the shootout was ‘sudden death’ and we had won the tournament!
