Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 10th March 2013

Winter returned with force this weekend – snow resulting in three of the scheduled four games being postponed.  The other fixture, the Under 18s Vs Reed Hall, was called off earlier as the opposition did not have enough players available. Therefore a blank weekend, which was a relief to all the Mum’s who were dreading standing out in the bitter cold on Mother’s Day!

Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 3rd March 2013

The Under 8s travelled to Lexden Saints hoping to break their duck and finally get their first win of the season.  Whilst this didn’t quite happen, the boys came away with a creditable 0-0 draw, and with a bit more luck could have scored the winner with almost the last kick of the game – the ball going agonisingly just wide of the post!  It was a great game to watch with good football played by both sides – a draw being the right result on the balance of play.  Bergholt Heath player of the match: Sam Doubleday

Our Under 10s were away to second in the table Colchester Athletic – a team who won convincing 8-0 on the Poors Field in the last meeting.  However this performance showed just how far the boys had come since then, and the result, whilst going the wrong way, was a creditable 1-0 defeat this time.

It was League Cup action for the Under 14s away to FC Clacton (Reds).  For a variety of reasons, there were quite a few players unavailable this week with just 12 players making up the squad.  However the lack of options did not really affect the teams performance. With a combination of some last ditch tackling, clearances off the line, and an inspired performance from the Clacton captain / keeper, the score was kept to a respectable 3-1 final result – the Clacton consolation coming in the last couple of minutes after a hat-trick from Ollie Sanderson, the last being a penalty after two superb goals: the first an individual effort and the second the result of a brilliant team passing move cutting the home team open.   Bergholt Heath ‘man of the match’: Ollie Sanderson.

The Under 18s completed a full set of away fixtures, at Frinton & Walton. Unfortunately they could not compete with their top of the table hosts, who ran out comfortable 5-0 winners.

Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 24th February 2013

On on very cold Sunday morning, the Under 8s played their last game of a tough February, at home to Feering Falcons.   The visitors made the better start and by half time they were 4 goals to the good, including a superb solo effort.  The second half saw Bergholt finally get going, and they took the game to the visitors and started making their defence work, whilst remaining largely untroubled.   However another cracking effort saw the visitors add one more to their half time tally.   Bergholt Heath player of the match: James Pomphrett.

The Under 10s were away to Long Melford and came away with a hard earned 2-1 victory, courtesy of goals from Jonah Murray and Thomas Whitlow.

Our Under 14s were at home to Halstead Town in a “A” league clash on a bumpy and hard Poors field pitch which made football quite difficult.  Bergholt ran out comfortable, if not somewhat underwhelming 2-0 winners, with both goals coming in the second half of this uneventful match: one goal each for James Holden and Sam Clark.  Bergholt Heath ‘man of the match’: Sam Clark.

The Under 18s had a spare weekend with no scheduled fixture.

Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 17th February 2013

Our Under 8s were away at Eight Ash Green who have a host of players being chased by professional academies – they start this young!  Unfortunately the gulf in class did tell and Bergholt did not manage to score a goal, but did concede a fair few.  Luckily these two clubs should not be in the same league next season.

The Under 10s were at home to Reed Hall Sentinels, but they too lost, although by only 3-1.   Two of the away teams goals were scored in quick fire fashion within a couple of crazy minutes.

Our Under 14s were away to Brooklands in Round 2 of the Open Cup, in what was likely to be a close game with both teams sitting comfortably mid table in the A league.  The first half was scrappy but what football there was, was played by Bergholt who came up against a very hard working Brooklands defence that limited Bergholt mainly to half chances.  However two defensive mistakes in quick succession saw Brooklands take the lead with almost the last kick of the half.  The second period saw Bergholt up their game and a long ball over the top from defence saw Owen Bernhardt race clear on goal, only to be brought down from behind for a penalty.  Ollie Sanderson strode up to hammer the ball into the net confidently for the equaliser.  Apart from a couple of corners Brooklands didn’t threaten the Bergholt goal and as the half wore on it was the visitors who had all the chances, just missing the target several times.  Just as extra time beckoned, Owen Bernhardt escaped his marker in the box to finish of a good passing move for the winner – the final whistle being blown immediately after the restart.  Final result: Brooklands 1-2 Bergholt Heath.  Bergholt Heath ‘man of the match’: Sam Clark.

The scheduled Under 18s match away to Reed Hall Sentinels was postponed by the home team due to lack of players being available.

Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 10th February 2013

All teams were scheduled home matches this week on the Poors Field, on an extremely wet and cold day!

First to kick off were our Under 10s versus Halstead Town Yellows.  Bergholt passed the ball extremely well and ran out very comfortable 6-1 winners with Richard Frost scoring 5 of their 6 goals.

Next up were the Under 14s on the main pitch, in a League Cup round 3 match against Frinton and Walton.   The game, especially in the first half, was scrappy, as both teams tried to find their touch after several weeks of postponed games.  In a largely uneventful first half both teams had half chances and periods of possession that came to nothing.  In fact the only noteworthy event was Bergholt’s central defender Sam Clark going off with concussion after being stuck in the face by a shot hit from just 2 yards away.  He went off to be checked out at hospital after feeling dizzy and sick – but, thankfully, was feeling much better by the evening.  The second half saw Bergholt playing with the wind and they started to impose themselves on the match.  10 minutes in and Bergholt were awarded a penalty after Owen Bernhardt was pushed in the box: Ollie Sanderson stepping up to blast the ball hard into the corner of the net. 1-0.  In what seemed an extremely long half for the supporters, stood frozen on the touch line, eventually (but actually only about 10 minutes later), Mickey Whittle got himself free inside the box to side step the final defender and slot the ball past the visiting ‘keeper.  Following a goal mouth scramble with around 5 minutes to go, the ball again fell to Mickey Whittle who hit a powerful shot from the edge of the 6 yard box against the underside of the bar.   The ball dropped down and hit the ‘keeper for an unfortunate own goal.   The rest of the match was played out in midfield – in fact the visitors didn’t really have a clear shot on the Bergholt  goal in the second half.   Final score: Bergholt Heath 3-0 Frinton & Walton.  Bergholt ‘man of the match’: James Hirst.

Back to the ‘mini soccer’ pitch and the Under 8s also hosted Halstead Town.  The Bergholt manager was pleased with their first half showing and in fact for the first time this season the Bergholt Under 8s finished a half in a winning position.  Unfortunately they couldn’t keep it up and by time full time came around they had conceded a few goals to lose the game.  At least they know the feeling of winning a half and this will give them encouragement for next season.

The final home match was our Under 18s at home to Layer Colts.  By this time the rain had turned to sleet and then snow, and the wind had also picked up.   In atrocious conditions it was the visitors who adapted better and they ran out 3-1 winners.

All scheduled fixtures were postponed again this week – not necessarily due to the residual snow, but mainly due to the quick thaw making the pitches unplayable.

Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 13th January 2013

Reed Hall vs. Under 8s.  As Bergholt Heath U8s are traditionally slow starters and concede early goals, their manager decided to alter the formation this week and play 3 in defence for the first half.  The boys took well to the new shape and kept Reed Hall at bay and in fact shaded it as the better team at the break.  They nearly got their reward when a handball in the Reed Hall area gave Bergholt a chance to take the lead.   A well struck penalty by Theo, low towards the corner of the net, was stopped by a fantastic save from the Reed Hall keeper.  HT 0-0.

With the team showing they were adapting well to the new way of playing, the Bergholt manager kept the same formation for the second half.  Things however didn’t go according to plan though, when a Bergholt goal kick fell to the Reed Hall striker on the centre circle and he hit it a superb first time shot back into the empty net.  This seemed to be the catalyst for Reed Hall to take control of the game and a number of errors by Bergholt proved costly as Reed Hall ended up 5-0 winners.

Despite the defeat, a number of positives to come out of the game and some food for thought on future games.

Our Under 10s were also away – as all teams were this week – to Boadicea Dynamos.   Featuring a few very good players, the manger knew this would be a tough match, and although Bergholt took the lead through a goal by Tyler Webb, the final score of 1-1 was a point gained.

Yet another away fixture, this time for the Under 14s, to Stanway Rovers.  Bergholt’s confidence was sky high after 3 consecutive wins, however they were up against a team that did the double over them last season.  Bergholt started the stronger of the two teams dominating the first minutes of the game.  The breakthrough came after just 2 minutes when a corner was delivered towards the back post by Max Booth.  It got a touch on the way through but was kept on by Sam Clark who had the composure to pull it back to Oliver Sanderson who’s shot took a deflection that wrong footed the keeper and dropped into the far corner.  1-0 Bergholt.  The next 15 minutes was fairly even but Bergholt were still having the better of the chances.  But then the last 10 minutes of the half ended the same as the first 10 begun, with Bergholt piling on the pressure.  A Mickey Whittle shot was goal bound was cleared off the line brilliantly. The resulting corner was taken by Oliver Sanderson and a glancing header at the near post by Jamie Bowden clipped the far post and spun in for his first goal for around two years.

Stanway began the second half stronger, as a lazy Bergholt team had slowed their momentum. This resulted in an early second half goal from Stanway:  A long throw was misjudged by the defender which left the goalkeeper stranded for as simple finish. Was the comeback on?
The answer was no! Conceding the goal brought Bergholt back to life and after dominating the rest of the match, with around 5 minutes remaining a long ball down the line was picked up by James Holden who cut inside of his man to strike at goal. However the keeper made a fantastic save but unfortunately for him, it fell at the feet of Jake Adams who blasted it into the empty net from inside the 6 yard box.

The Under 18s completed the set of away fixtures, at Broomfield Youth.  Managing to field just a bare 11 players with nobody available to fill the substitutes bench due to several injuries, including a couple with broken bones, Bergholt put up a fight but eventually lost the match 1-0.

Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 6th January 2013

Our Under 8s were up against Brooklands at home on the Poors Field.  A new year but unfortunately the same old problem for Bergholt Heath who continued to have their slow start to the game and by half-time they were 3-0 down.  The second half saw a much improved performance from the boys and with the defence standing firm this gave the midfield and forwards a chance to make some attacks missing from the first half.  Despite the pressure Bergholt could not find the back of the net and conceded another when a clearance rebounded off a Brooklands shin straight into the goal.  Final score 0-4.

The Under 10s were away to Wivenhoe Town in league cup action, and eased themselves into the next round with a comfortable 4-0 victory.

The Under 14s were at home in the league, to FC Clacton (Blues).   The game started in end to end fashion and some poor positional play saw the visitors take the lead after 5 minutes.   Bergholt huffed and puffed but were struggling to get their usual passing game going, and from another individual mistake after 15 minutes, Clacton went 2-0 up.   This finally spurred Bergholt into action and soon after they pulled a goal back courtesy of a scrambled effort from Sam Clark after the Clacton ‘keeper had given a free kick away for picking up a back pass.   Within 2 minutes Bergholt had equalised, again it was Sam Clark getting his head to a corner to head powerfully into the net.  Suddenly Bergholt were full of confidence and within a few minutes two quick fire goals from James Holden saw the half time score a respectable 4-2.   The second half was a much quieter affair with Bergholt in control.   The 5th and final goal coming from James Holden, who completed his hat-trick around 10 minutes from time.   Final score: Bergholt Heath 5-2 Brooklands.  Bergholt ‘man of the match’: Max Booth.

The Under 18s were also in league action, away to Feering Falcons, and ran out comfortable 6-2 winners.

Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 16th December 2012

Our Under 8s and Under 10s continue their mid-season break and will return to action on 6th January when the leagues resume.

The Under 14s played their final match before Christmas, away to Halstead Town.  Bergholt started brightly and within 5 minutes were winning 1-0 thanks to Owen Bernhardt who scored his first goal of the season after breaking the Halstead off side trap and racing through to finish one-on-one with the home ‘keeper.  Ten minutes and it was 2-0 when Ollie Sanderson crashed a free kick against the bar only for Max Booth to react quickest and head the ball into the goal.  Unfortunately rather than spurring the team on to greater things, scoring so early in the match saw Bergholt become a bit cocky and stop doing the simple things well, which allowed a physical Halstead team back into the match.  Just before half time a free kick on the right saw the ball swung into the Bergholt box for a Halstead player to head into the net unchallenged.  After a half time roasting by the manager, Bergholt came out for the second half in the same manner as the start of the first. A few minutes later there was an unsavoury moment when a home player caught a Bergholt midfielder with a high tackle above the knee which resulted in the player being helped off the pitch with a nasty cut on his leg. Although the referee gave a foul, he did not take any further action for a challenge that would have been a ‘straight red’ in professional football, which lead to a heated exchange of words between the referee and the injured player’s father, who ended up being sent from the touchline by the referee.  Play eventually resumed and Bergholt scored another goal almost straight from the kick off, courtesy of a second from Max after a long ball from Sam Clark. Soon it was 4-1 from a now fired up Bergholt team, Sam Clark getting the final touch in a goalmouth scramble from a corner.  Owen then helped himself to 2 more goals by beating a beleaguered Halstead off side trap, to complete his hat-trick.  Final score: Halstead 1-6 Bergholt Heath.  Bergholt Heath ‘man of the match’: Owen Bernhardt.

Our Under 18s also played their final match of 2012, away to Little Oakley Reds.  Unfortunately Bergholt  lost 4-1.
