The following free events are being hosted by the Friends of St Mary’s Old Church in 2025.

  • Sunday 11 May – Talk by local historian John Worland on ‘The First Elizabethan Witch Trial’. 2.30pm – free refreshments
  • Sunday 8 June – Talk by Adam Wightman, Director of Colchester Archaeological Trust on ‘The Former Essex County Hospital Site’’. 2.30pm – free refreshments
  • Sunday 6 July – Resonate Choir Concert – 4pm-5pm – free refreshments
  • Sunday 20 July – Summer Songs of Praise Service – 2.30pm – free refreshments
  • Sunday 30 November – Mulled Wine & Mince Pies with the Octavia Singers – 11am-1pm.
    This event is also an opportunity to register or reregister as a Friend of St. Mary’s Old Church
  • Sunday 21 December – Candlelit Carol Service

As usual everyone is welcome, there’s free parking and free refreshments including a glass of prosecco.  Entry to all events is free but the Friends welcome any donations made on the day (cash or card). This will support the ongoing upkeep of the beautiful 1000-year-old church. We look forward to welcoming you there. Old Church Annual Call to Mulled Wine & Mince Pies

Invitation To Enjoy Music, Mulled Wine & Mince Pies

This coming Sunday, 26th November, the Friends of St Mary’s Old Church invite you to enjoy ‘lunchtime’ Mulled Wine & Mince Pies with them. This is a free event and all are welcome between 11 am – 1 pm in the Old Church on Hall Road (CO6 3DU). This is also an opportunity to view the Mediaeval Paintings.

You might also want to take a winter walk before or after, if so you might want to check this history walk out on this website.

Fundraising

Mediaeval Painting

The Friends would be happy to receive donations, of course. This will help them with the maintenance of the Church and Grounds. In recent years they have received great support from the Churches Conservation Trust who funded significant structural repairs. There still remains, though, much work to be done including expensive conservation costs for the mediaeval paintings.

Abbey Road come to the Orpen Hall

Dance to Beatles Tribute Act – Abbey Road

The Friends of St Mary’s Old Church are hosting a dance with Abbey Road on Saturday 16th September. Tickets will cost £12.50 with doors opening at 7:30pm. Bring your own food & drink.

The money raised from this event with go towards restoring the Mediaeval Paintings found during the church’s redecoration.

There will also be a raffle and a short auction. pc.gov.uk

Cricket Festival 2022 Starts Next Week

West Bergholt CC Festival 2022

West Bergholt CC are running the week-long Cricket Festival 2022 at their home ground on Manor Road. Every day will see the bar and BBQ open for some much-needed fundraising. If you enjoy your cricket, why not pop along – the fixtures are as follows:

  • Tuesday 23rd August 1 pm start – a 40-over friendly between:
    West Bergholt XI vs Armed forces
  • Wednesday 24th August 5:30 pm start – a 20/20 match between:
    West Bergholt XI vs Bures XI
  • Thursday 25th August 5:30 pm start – 20/20 format again between:
    West Bergholt XI vs Queen’s Head XI (don’t bring your own beer!)
  • Friday 26th August 1 pm start – a 40-over friendly between:
    West Bergholt XI vs Suffolk XI
  • Saturday 27th August 1 pm start – a 45-over league match between:
    West Bergholt 2nd XI vs Maldon
  • Sunday 28th August 9 am start – a ‘Sixes Tournament‘ this promises:
    “Fast & exciting cricket with teams battling for supremacy”
  • Monday 29th August 1 pm start – a 40-over friendly between:
    West Bergholt Saxons vs East Anglia vets.

Like most schools today, fundraising is essential to Heathlands. Whilst they have done well despite COVID-19 (see their end-of-year update), the PTA needs your help once again and it couldn’t be at a more convenient time.

The West Bergholt ‘allotmenteers‘ showed how to grow money for local causes as they raised £4,087 last year.  Their charity stall will be hoping to raise even more in 2019 when local causes benefitting will include:

  • Children’s Playground,
  • Village Fete,
  • Five “T’s” Fellowship.

The stall is now open pretty much all year round so make a point of looking out for what’s available,
