Great British Spring Clean Arrives in the Village

Great British Spring CleanGreat British Spring Clean

The Great British Spring Clean is a campaign with a simple aim: to bring people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our towns, villages, countryside and beaches.

The campaign wants to inspire 400,000 people to get outdoors, get active and help clear up the rubbish that lies around us.  Join this growing army of Litter Heroes who have had enough of other people’s litter and are willing to do something about it.

Litter Warriors

If you want to get involved in this clean up then join the Litter Warriors.  Our local heroes will be meeting at 10 am on Saturday 10th March at the Orpen Hall.  To add a little spice, all the rubbish collected during the hour will be weighed – do you want to be the village’s Litter Pick Hero?

All equipment and materials will be provided.

Why the need?

Food packaging, plastic bottles, takeaway meals and cigarette butts have all contributed to a growing menace that affects our wildlife, streets, countryside and sense of pride.  Unfortunately, our society contains many individuals who have no sense of responsibility for our local environment.  According to a report by the CPRE and the Policy Exchange, since the 1960s, littering has grown by 500%. Moreover, says the charity Tidy Britain, local authorities spend nearly £1 billion picking up litter every year.

Why Do People Litter?

  1. People litter because they do not feel responsible for public areas like streets and parks. The more they litter, the more it becomes a habit, and the worse the community looks.
  2. People usually litter outside their own neighbourhood where their rubbish becomes someone else’s problem.
  3. People litter because they believe someone else, a council worker or responsible neighbour, will pick up after them.
  4. Once litter starts to pile up, people feel even less responsible for adding to the litter. If an area is clean, people are less likely to litter in the first place.
