Day 7 of Lockdown – The ‘Look After Yourself’ Edition

Asterix vs PandemixDay 7 of Lockdown

So, it’s day 7, coming to the end of the first week and we’re looking at the possibility of there being many more weeks.  Nerves are already fraying at webmaster’s house.  With that in mind, looking after yourself is a key imperative, that’s why we’ll inject humour from time to time, but our first item is from Public Health England (PHE).  Others are:

Guidance on Mental Health & Wellbeing

Over the weekend PHE published a document basically concerned with helping us preserve our sanity in these troubling times.  It addresses a wide range of things you can do to help with your mental health & wellbeing, many with links to external resources such as helplines and the NHS Fitness Studio:

  • Consider how to connect with others.
  • Help and support others.
  • Talk about your worries.
  • Look after your physical wellbeing.
  • Look after your sleep.
  • Try to manage difficult feelings.
  • Manage your media and information intake.
  • Get the facts.
  • Think about your new daily routine.
  • Do things you enjoy.
  • Set goals.
  • Keep your mind active.
  • Take time to relax and focus on the present.
  • If you can, get outside once a day, or bring nature in.

Fun fitness challengeOther Resources

PHE has done a good job with their document but lots of others are also putting out material, a lot targeted at kids.  If you or your family are members of a large organisation, the chances are they will have developed a home fitness programme.  For example, webmaster’s other job (Trampoline Coach) is governed by British Gymnastics who have developed a GymFit programme (the link will only work if you are a BG member).

Sport England have launched their Join the Movement campaign to support people to get and stay active, provided they are well enough and following the latest government guidelines, which stipulates one form of exercise outdoors in any given day.

Scouting has a ‘welcome to the great indoors‘ with 100+ stay-at-home activities.  Guiding, similarly, has ‘adventures at home‘.  If you or your kids belong to a national organisation it is worth checking their website out.

Other materials are also available from social media such as the “fun” challenge on the right.

Scam Alert

A previous edition alerted against scams, well one specific one ‘in the wild’ appears to come from HMG who warn:

Scam penalty charge noticeThe Government has only sent one text message to the public regarding new rules about staying at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Any others claiming to be from UK Government are false.

Criminals are able to use spoofing technology to send texts and emails impersonating organisations that you know and trust. We would remind anyone who receives an unexpected text or email asking for personal or financial details not click on the links or attachments, and don’t respond to any messages that ask for your personal or financial details.”

If you receive any such messages, report them to Action Fraud – www.actionfraud.police.uk/report-phishing

CBC Community Response Document

This useful document addresses a lot of how and what type questions.  It offers useful links, contacts & social media channels and identifies local support groups on Facebook.  It also talks about volunteering, the local Food Bank (which webmaster is reliably informed is the busiest in Essex), and utility services.  Read it here:
