Tree Survey Results in Decision to Fell 2 Trees

The Oak Tree to be felled is on The Heath in front of Heathlands School
The Oak Tree on the Heath by Heathlands School

Recently West Bergholt Parish Council commissioned an independent Arboriculturist to undertake a tree survey. The aim of the tree survey was to assess the Wellbeing & Safety of trees under the Council’s care. This initiative stemmed from the Council’s regular review of the buildings and grounds under its management.

The Council invited quotes for the task and were pleased that a Local Business, the Tree & Lawn Company (TLC), offered the most competitive, and timely (outside of school hours), quote to carry out the work. Subsequently, the Arboriculturist surveyed the trees at Lorkin Daniell Playing Field, The Heath, Poors Field and the Allotments. They had the task of investigating signs of declining health, dead or broken branches, decay, or fungus, etc.

Reported in June

In late June, their report presented to the Council included information about 499 trees in the village. It identified two trees, an Oak Tree and a Cherry Tree, as needing attention within 6 months. Neither of these trees has assigned Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). Regrettably, both trees need to be felled due to severe decay/fungus.

Initially, TLC will fell the Oak Tree, situated by Heathlands School Car Park on the heath, on the 16th of August. TLC will leave the trunk largely intact, as part of the Council’s ongoing conservation work, where it will provide a refuge for wildlife.

The Cherry Tree due to be felled is behind the WBPC Clubhouse

They will then fell the Cherry Tree located behind the Football Club at the Lorkin Daniell Playing field (which has decay and reached its end of life), on the 17th of August. The Council is now considering replacement Trees.

Please take care if you are out and about in the village around these areas on these days.
