Songs & Tales from the CountrysideSongs & Tales take the place of the Origins of Surnames at the Annual Bernard Colbron Lecture on 13th November next week. This is because, due to circumstances outside his control, Charlie Haylock is unable to deliver the lecture himself. Charlie has instead arranged for his friend Neil Catchpole to visit us in his place.
Neil Catchpole last visited the History Group about 15 years ago, he is a man of many talents. He is involved with the Stour Valley Trust, the Dedham Vale Area of Natural Beauty and Clare Country Park and grew up in the area.

Steve Hallam will lead a guided walk to seek out fungi, berries, soft fruits, nuts & seeds. All of these are now out in abundance. To join Steve you should meet him at the Old Church at 2 pm on Saturday 26th October – wear suitable clothing! You should wear strong boots or wellies as we may encounter

Do You Need Recycling Containers/Bags?Households now need a voucher to collect new or replacement recycling containers from a local stockist. Vouchers have only previously been required for garden waste sacks; this is now being extended to include clear bags, food caddies, and glass/can boxes too. All these containers remain free of charge.

Trees for Years 2019Colchester Borough Council is giving residents and groups who’d like to green-up their gardens a helping hand, with its annual ‘Trees for Years’ giveaway on Saturday, 2 February. The 24th AGM of the Friends of Hillhouse Wood is on Wednesday 12th December 2018. Starting in the Orpen Hall at 7.30 pm, refreshments will be served from 7.00 pm. The Friends will welcome members and non-members alike. The draft agenda is as follows:
Wild Flowers of EssexWest Bergholt Gardeners recently enjoyed an interesting talk by Dr. Chris Gibson about “Wild Flowers of Essex”. Chris drew on his 30+ year career as a nature conservationist, working to preserve Essex wildlife and landscapes. The Gardeners learnt about the large areas of ancient woodland around the county (which includes Hillhouse Wood) and the flowers and plants which flourish there.
West Bergholt Gardeners certainly got food for thought at their recent meeting on 15th October. Stuart Gough from The Oak Tree Low Carbon Farm described the green ethos of the group.
