Halloween – Fun or Fear?

Halloween imagery

Essex Police are concerned that while many enjoy Halloween, some might not.  Also, below, is news of a Colchester Business Opinion Survey. If you run a small, or a large business, you might want to check it out.  First of all, though, what do Essex Police have to say about Halloween?

Halloween

Halloween is a fun and exciting time for many but some people can find it unsettling. It’s often a busy time for police too.  This Halloween they would like to remind everyone to think of others and be considerate around those not taking part. They say that they will take a robust approach to anyone causing problems.

Fun or Fear?

What might seem like being fun and mischievous to some can be really quite frightening to others.  Playing practical jokes on neighbours you don’t know, or throwing things at their houses, because they’re not taking part in trick or treat is unacceptable.  In many cases it may actually be criminal in nature.

If you decide to go trick or treating, please think carefully about which doors you knock on, particularly if you know there are elderly people living there.  Where possible prearrange visits to neighbours and friends.  Dressing up is part of the fun at this time of year. They urge people, though, not to deliberately go out of their way to scare or frighten members of the public.

They want everyone to enjoy Halloween and Bonfire Night by keeping themselves safe and making sure they do not cause problems in their communities.

If you are concerned about Halloween

Essex Police have made some posters that you can display at your home advising trick-or-treaters whether or not you would welcome a visit.  You can download them from their website using this link.  You could, of course, simply put a note on your door (or gate) saying either:

  • Trick-or-treaters welcomed, or
  • No trick-or-treaters please.

Colchester Business Opinion Survey 2022

As the town of Colchester takes the momentous step forward into city status it’s time to take the temperature of the local economy, defined here as businesses with postcodes CO1-CO7.

The Council, Colchester Business Enterprise Agency (Colbea), the Our Colchester BID, the Federation of Small Business (FSB), the Let’s Do Business Group and the BEST Growth Hub have all joined together in this study to assess the:

  • Degree of business recovery taking place following the major Covid pandemic impacts in 2020/21
  • Identify key issues facing businesses currently
  • Identify measures being taken by businesses to address these key issues
  • Assess whether businesses have accessed business support, information advice and guidance and how we might help
  • Understand what businesses would like to see from Colchester’s new city status
  • Understand company aspirations for the future
  • Inform local businesses about Colchester’s pipeline of projects offering local business opportunities and how they can get involved
  • Assess the degree of business confidence going forward

The results from this survey will inform the delivery of the new Economic Strategy for Colchester which is due to be published later this year.

The deadline for completion is Friday 18th November 2022.

Please do share with your networks as they need to reach those businesses which don’t have premises as well as those who do.  Here is a link to the survey:
