BHYFC Under 13s vs Stanway Rovers Reds

This week, Bergholt played their first home game of the season hosting Stanway Rovers Reds, with whom they shared a good 11-a-side friendly game at the end of last season.

With a few players unavailable, including goalkeeper James who had not recovered from his wrist injury sustained in last week’s game, Bergholt were only able to field 11 players and once again had midfielder Thomas in goal, whilst midfielders Harrison and Toby were pushed back into defence. One welcome face back on the scene was Tommy who was making a visit back to the village from Norfolk – the
Bergholt manager was pleased to have kept him registered …

Bright Start

The game kicked off in the bright sunshine and warm weather and the opening period was fairly even with both teams cancelling each other out and neither ‘keeper having much to do. Then the game came to life when hot-shot Oscar fired another cracker from outside the box over the Rover’s keeper for the hosts to take a one-goal lead. This was on top of the two belters he had scored the week before.

With the lion’s share of possession Stanway tried to get back on level terms, but the Bergholt back line lead by Aaron and midfield were thwarting each attack and if breached, Thomas was in good form; one particular save from a one-on-one being the highlight. However, even he was unable to stop Rovers scoring when the ball fell to their midfielder on the edge of the box and he found the top corner with a delightful curling shot. The game then ebbed and flowed for the remainder of the half but without further score. HT 1-1.

Rovers’ Lion’s Share

The second half was more of the same with Rovers having the lion’s share of the possession, whilst Bergholt had the bigger goal threat. With the heat and lack of subs for both teams, tiredness started to be a factor and the game became a bit scrappy and some tackles became laboured and at times last-ditch. However, Bergholt still looked to push forward for the winner and in particular Nico, who had had
a quiet first half, got a second wind in the last quarter of the match and his trickery and direct running were becoming a pain in Rovers’ side.

With five minutes to go it looked like the game was headed for a draw until, from a Bergholt attack, the ball fell to Josh 8 yards from goal. His half-volley bounced and bobbled across the face of the goal evading the outstretched hand of former Layer team mate Sam in the Rovers goal and nestled into the corner of the net. Wild celebrations from the Bergholt lads ensued …. The remaining few minutes were
seen out by Bergholt and with it they took all 3 points. FT 2-1.

Harsh

The scoreline was a bit harsh for Rovers as they had done more than enough to get a point out of the game, but take nothing away from Bergholt who ran their socks off from the first whistle to the last and earnt these points from pure hard work.

Bergholt Heath player of the match: Josh Fairbrother – worked tirelessly from box to box.

Little Oakley Blues vs BHYFC U11s

A grueling match saw the boys maintain their unbeaten start to the season.  An impressive start saw the boys take an early 2 goal lead, after some excellent play from Henry down the right-hand side, creating many chances with his speed and skillful play. Despite this good start to the match the boys found themselves trailing for much of the second half.  However, they stuck to the task and continued to battle hard, not giving up.

With the game entering into the final 2 minutes, and it looking as if the boys would suffer their first defeat of the season, Oscar wriggled free on the edge of the box and hit a thunderous shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and landed over the line.

The action didn’t stop there, and the boys nearly snatched a goal at the death when a long range effort went narrowly wide.

The final whistle was greeted with loud applause from all the spectators and respectful hand shakes between the boys and coaches with everyone appreciating the efforts of both teams.
