Plan for the Environment to support diversity

The Environment & Highways Committee of West Bergholt Parish Council met on 14th October 2021 with topics including:

  • Handymen have been busy including cutting grass, dealing with a trip hazard in New Church Road,
  • Concern about overgrown Hall Road pond,
  • Hopkins Home building site,
  • Lorkin Daniell hedging & safety concerns, and
  • Orpen Hall tree replacement.

Are You Affected by Energy Prices Soaring?

We know energy prices will be going up, what can you do?

Not specific but an example of where heat can be lost

Current legislation limits Energy prices to a ‘capped’ amount but we know that this cap increases over time to reflect wholesale costs of energy sources (which are soaring right now). There are some things, though, that you can do to mitigate this to some extent. The following has been prepared by the Planning & Development Committee to give you some options.

There are many ways to save money, some simply require an adjustment to the way you use these supplies, others require significant investment. What follows tries to guide you through these possible solutions in increasing orders of cost.

Woods Bowls Club Review of 2021

Review of 2021 Bowling Season at Woods

In Woods' review of 2021 Bowls' Big Weekend delivered

In their review of 2021, Woods Bowls Club recorded competitive success and growth in membership numbers!

Woods started playing competitive games against other clubs again in early May.  Then the focus was on their annual open day, which this year was timed to coincide with Bowls England’s ‘Bowls Big Weekend’.  The club even managed to feature on BBC Essex’s ‘The Quest’ on Sunday 23rd May by being the final destination; Barry & Liana made it in time to win their challenge!

Following this, the open day was a MASSIVE success with 50 people trying bowls out (they nearly ran out of Tea, cake and Bowls!) Around 30 people have now joined the club.

The West Bergholt Baby & Toddler group’s schedule for October – December 2021 includes a wide range of activities from handmade kids clothes to professional photography  The full list is shown below, please be aware that some events may change at short notice.

The Village Quiz Challenge Cup

Eleven teams vied for the Village Quiz Challenge Cup last week and raised £310 towards the cost of a new Friendly Bench from Plastecowood – that’s well over half way!

Quizmaster Mike Morrisey, with support from Anita & Pauline, delivered a quiz with 10 rounds of 10 questions and a bonus picture round of 45 famous places (like Angel Falls). The halfway point was time for the Raffle which contributed £90 to the overall sum raised. The rounds were:

Digs at Jacks & the Mercury Theatre

Adam Wightman Reporting on the Digs & Jacks & the Mercury

Following the success of their last meeting, Adam Wightman (Senior Project Manager of The Colchester Archaeological Trust), is going to update the Local History Group on these digs this Wednesday. Both digs were possible because of refurbishment works.

In the case of Jacks, just off the High Street, builders dug six shafts to create foundations to stabilise this 17th century building. This gave the Trust 6 windows on the past; find out what they found in Shaft C at Jacks.

New Parish Councillor – Joel Fayers

Joel Fayers

Meet Joel Fayers – New Parish Councillor

The Parish Council co-opted Joel as a councillor in July 2021 & he has joined the Planning Committee. He has lived in West Bergholt with his wife and son since 2017.

He is a Director and Partner of a PR and consultation agency which specialises in the built environment.  Prior to working in this sector, he spent several years working in Parliament in Westminster and similar work with District Councils.
