Charlie Haylock talk about his role in the Netflix film “The Dig”
Local Suffolk celebrity, Charlie Haylock returns to the Local History Group for their first talk in person since March last year. This time it is to talk about his work as the dialect coach in the production of the recently released film “The Dig”.
The film tells the story of how local amateur archaeologist Basil Brown, played by Ralph Fiennes, discovered the Anglo Saxon Royal ship burial at Sutton Hoo. Suffolk Landowner, Edith Pretty, employed Basil, an amateur archaeologist, in 1939 to satisfy her suspicions that the numerous mounds on her property had secrets to tell.
Charlie is an excellent, entertaining speaker and all are welcome to this talk in the Orpen Hall. Taking place on Wednesday 8th September, doors open at 7 pm for a 7:30 start. Members cost is £2, visitors are welcome to attend as well for £5.

The Film & Book
Both remain close to the truth although some events are created for dramatic effect; for example, Basil Brown was not buried in a cave-in in real life.
Published in 2007, the book was written by John Preston. As Wikipedia puts it :
The author employs a degree of literary licence so that the account in the book differs in various ways from the real events of the Sutton Hoo excavations.
