Help relieve traffic congestion

Keep the roads around the school clear for safety, avoid congestion
Keep the roads around the school clear for safety

The Parish Council has recently been consulting on proposals to improve traffic safety in the village, especially around the area of the school at the starting and finishing times of the school day.  There are major problems with parking and traffic congestion.

We would like to ask those parents who need to drive their children to school to make use of the car park at the Treble Tile or the Orpen Hall car park and then walk the children the short distance to the school.  When using the pub car park the parents can then access the footpath along the side of Poors Land to walk their children safely to school. This would greatly help to reduce the congestion around the school roads.

We are grateful for the cooperation of the Treble Tile in allowing the use of their car park.

More details of other traffic safety measures can be seen in the recently adopted New Church Road Traffic Safety Plan.

BHYFC Under 9s vs Colchester Villa Yellows

Following the Remembrance Day minute’s silence, which was impeccably observed by both teams and supporters alike, the match kicked-off with Bergholt looking to avenge a very close one-nil defeat by the visitors Colchester Villa Yellows only a few weeks ago.

As with the first match, the teams were both evenly matched and most of the game was played in the middle third of the pitch with Bergholt looking to pass their way through Villa, whilst Villa looked to pump the ball forward to their lone striker.  Chances were limited, however Bergholt had the best two opportunities of the half.  Firstly when James made a great run down the left, which saw him put a delightful ball across the box which found Thomas H alone at the far post.  Unfortunately his first time effort went just wide.  The second fell to Theo who was all lined up to hit a shot, but was superbly tackled by the Villa defender.

Bergholt’s defence, in particular Eddie and Joseph, were keeping the Villa attack at bay and if any chances did arise, Daniel was able to handle them with ease.  HT 0-0.

The second half was very much like the first with both teams cancelling each other out in the middle of the pitch and it was clear that one goal would decide it.  With five minutes to go, the Villa tactic paid off when a long ball to their striker saw him burst through the Bergholt defence and then round Daniel.  The goal-bound effort was too far in front of him to head it clear so the covering defender Thomas L put out his hand to push it around the post.  Penalty to Villa!

Having been denied a certain goal, the Villa striker took the penalty himself and hit such a hard shot low into the corner of the net that Daniel had no chance to save it.  The last remaining minutes were played out in the same fashion as the first 35 minutes and the game finished with the same scoreline as the first meeting.  FT 0-1.

Bergholt Heath player of the match:  Eddie Davies – lots of great tackles, clearances and man-marking.

Wivenhoe Town vs BHYFC Under 11s

As is the usual way we started this encounter very lacklustre.

Despite asking the boys to replicate the last 15 minutes of the previous weeks game, we started the match like a bag of spent fireworks.  Lack of tackling conviction, bad passing and statuesque movement meant we gave Wivenhoe the advantage.  They very nearly took the lead when a goalmouth scramble was just about cleared in time.

Once again the second half was far better we spread apart  and the passing improved. Eventually after several attacks Matt took on a couple players and slotted the ball home, GOOOAAALLL!!!

This spurred the boys on more and they looked far more confident . Numerous chances came. Fred made  himself space on the right a couple of times but his shots were just not enough.  Jack had the ball four yards out but got caught in his feet.

Eventually Tyler made a good run and pushed it confidently home GOOOAAALLL!!!

Tom had one effort go over and then Jonah’s shot cannoned off the keeper into the net GOOOAAALLL!!!

With the game safe we pushed Ben upfront which left us short at the back.  Nat , Dan and Harv coped well and we finished 3-0 victorious.

Man of the Match went to Fred for a much better second half performance

BHYFC Under 15s vs Clacton

The Under 15’s took on FC Clacton at home on the Poors Field with a later than usual kick off to allow for the clean up operation from the fireworks the night before – which had been completed impressively before the teams arrived.  In view of the away fixture when Clacton dominated the first half only for Bergholt to come back strongly in the second to win by the odd goal, the manager was keen to stress the importance of starting well against a team no doubt looking for revenge.  From the first whistle it appeared to be an open game with both teams striving to push forward and score.

The Bergholt defence generally coped well with the Clacton strikers – although they needed one goal line clearance – and the home attack was pressurising the visitors into some hasty clearances.  After 15 minutes Bergholt took the lead via a free kick from Max into the top corner.  Back came Clacton but they were starting to struggle against a team now well in command.  James Holden headed over from a corner and there were several half chances as Bergholt piled on the pressure.  The second came when Max took another free kick from just inside his own half and Sam got free of his marker to direct the ball into the net with a deft touch on its way past him.  HT: 2-.0.

The second half was only a couple of minutes old when Bergholt scored their third.  A superb piece of play involving Jake and then Max sent James on his way and he held off the defender to fire past the keeper. Within the space of a few more minutes,Bergholt scored their fourth when Max played another ball over the top and James.  By now Clacton were looking like they wanted the match to end, having almost no interest in the game.  Max scored his second and Bergholt’s fifth before the manager decided to give both central defenders a break and take the opportunity to look at other combinations that maybe required in future.  This brought the visitors back to life and they caused a few awkward moments towards the end of the game but failed to seriously trouble Conner in the Bergholt goal.

Final score: Bergholt Heath 5 – 0   FC Clacton.

Bergholt man of the max: Max Booth – another all action display – either scoring or setting up all 5 goals!

  • Under 11 vs Tempest, KO 10.00am

Poo problem – dog fouling

Dog fouling is nasty - there is no poo fairy

Poo problem – dog fouling

There are often complaints about the problem of dog fouling in the village. Most dog walkers do take responsibility for clearing up after their dog and it is the few who don’t that create a bad image for all the others.

There was a problem recently at the doctor’s surgery.  A dog had been allowed to foul just outside the surgery and an unwary visitor had trodden in it and then unbeknown walked it through the surgery. This was a very unpleasant task for the staff to clean up afterwards as well as a hygiene issue.

All dog walkers should have, by law, a plastic bag with them and use this to pick up the poo and place in one of the many dog bins strategically placed around the village.

Dog mess on the pavements, in the hedgerows or on the streets is very unpleasant, unhealthy and unnecessary.

Please remember that no dogs are permitted on the Lorkin Daniell Field and this includes all areas around the Orpen Hall. Dog wardens will apply fines for offenders.

PLEASE ALWAYS CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG

Pop-up tea room comes to the village

Cup of tea and cookiesHaving lived in the village for many years Aaron & Misty have often gone on walks around the village and felt that something was missing.  Add to this that Misty is so keen on baking & catering that she catered her own wedding, it is probably not a total surprise that she is now embarking on her ‘pop-up tea room’ venture.  Opening every Sunday in St Mary’s Church Hall between 12:30 – 4:30 you will be able to enjoy a variety of hot drinks and sweet & savoury treats.  In Misty’s words:

I have made quite a few wedding cakes and birthday cakes, and my gingerbread house and Christmas cakes are very popular at Christmas.  I wanted to start up the little tea cosy in West Bergholt because I feel the village is really missing a nice welcoming place to enjoy a variety of hot drinks and sweet and savoury treats. We have so many lovely places to walk in the village and what way to finish it off with a nice sit down with some refreshments.  I hope that people understand where I am trying to go with this idea and come give it a try.

Snow worries?  For the past 2 years we have had a brave band of “Snow Patrol” volunteers who have worked to keep the pavements in key areas clear of ice and snow during bad weather.

With early indications suggesting a colder winter than average for the UK, we hope the current volunteers will again join the team this year.  Any new volunteers would be very welcome to help as well.   We aim to keep the pavements clear for access to essential community assets such as:

  • Shops,
  • Pharmacy,
  • Doctors Surgery,
  • Heathlands School,
  • Bus Stops,
  • Orpen Hall,
  • Places of Worship, etc…

Anyone who is willing to participate can phone Harry Stone on 241026 or email [email protected].

Local Bus user – have your say!

Local bus in West BergholtIt’s not too late to have your say on the future of supported local bus services.

As you may be aware, in September the County Council began a major review of its support for local bus services in the County.   The public consultation seeks residents’ and passenger transport customers’ views on local bus services which are supported by the County Council, and their preferences and needs for services in the future.

The consultation has now been ‘live’ for 7 weeks. It’s clear that people care about the future of their individual bus services, however, the Council would like to encourage as many people as possible to take this opportunity to contribute towards the future of local bus services.  It is important the Council has a high level of response from the public so that decisions are made on robust evidence.

The consultation can be accessed online until 9 December 2013.  Paper copies of the consultation are also be available through libraries or by calling 0845 603 7631.

New Church Road Traffic Safety Plan agreed by PC

New Church Road Traffic Safety
One of the plans to be viewed from the linked page                           (Click for larger image)

At a special meeting of the Parish Council held on 6th November, the plan designed to help alleviate some of the traffic problems in and around New Church Road, particularly around school times, was approved.

In brief the plan is to put restrictions on parking at the junctions along New Church Road, including the end junctions where inconsiderate parking can cause dangers at any time.

Part of the plan is to raise awareness of the need to take extra care in the vicinity of a school and to achieve this the Parish Council will seek the imposition of a 20mph limit along the road.  Also the part the school can play in influencing drivers’ behaviour was discussed and so it is hoped that working with the Parish Council and local residents a campaign to impact on the problem will be launched as the above measures are put into place.

The full plan is now published on this web site [New Church Road Traffic Safety Plan].

Are you at risk from burglary?

Burglar
Secure your home and remain vigilant

West Bergholt residents suffered 3 burglaries or attempted burglaries last week and Essex Police are cranking up their efforts to cut the incidence rate.  Their operation has identified a number of burglary hotspots in and around Colchester with parts of West Bergholt having been identified as a hot spot recently, in particular the hot areas in the West Bergholt and Eight Ash Green beat are:

  • Mumford Road,
  • Donard Drive,
  • Upton Close,
  • Lexden Road,
  • Chapel Road,
  • The Avenue,
  • Queen’s Road,
  • Spring Lane,
  • the Spinney,
  • The Retreat.

Members of our local communities can help the police by keeping vigilant, and through reporting any suspicious activity, which could relate to burglaries.  To report non-emergency incidents, or to give non-emergency information, please telephone 101, and, as always, dial 999 in an emergency.  It also pays, of course, to make sure that your property is locked, of the three recent incidents one was a result of forced entry, another no forced entry was necessary since a patio door was unlocked whilst the third was unsuccessful an attempt at forced entry left some damage but no entry was gained.

Information about suspicious persons, suspicious activity and related vehicles, will help Essex Police to keep crime Down!
