VE-Day 80th Anniversary

80 years ago on 8th May earlier generations celebrated the end of war in Europe, or VE-Day as it was dubbed. As BBC Radio, and the Newspapers, announced the news, workers left their buildings to join in ad hoc celebrations in the street. Later they would organise street parties as well.
In that spirit of celebration, whilst at the same time commemorating the losses, West Bergholt PC are joining many others in organising events on this date.
Of course, the war continued in the Eastern Theatre until August with British & Allied Troops still actively engaged in defeating the Japanese. They would have to wait until 15th August for Japan to surrender, this date becoming known as VJ-Day in the UK.

In the evening event we will meet outside The Orpen Memorial Hall complex from 8.30pm (weather permitting, if not inside the Orpen Hall). We will start with music with free teas, coffee and cake. Our branch of the Women’s Institute will be handing round the free tasters of the Official Women’s Institute VE Day 2025 “Orange and Ginger Cake”. The Social Club bar will also be open for attendees wanting something a little stronger!
Shortly after this the local West Bergholt Concert Band and Vocal Zones Choir will perform a half hour set of nostalgic songs from the era from 8.45pm to 9.15pm. There will then be a brief speech with a reading of “The Tribute”. After that we will be lighting the beacon in remembrance at 9.30pm.
