Storm Ciara is Coming – it could hit West Bergholt

Are you weather readyStorm Ciara is Coming

Yesterday the Met Office said that “Storm Ciara will bring heavy rain and widespread gales to the UK this weekend”, and they mean the whole of UK.

Frank Saunders, Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office said:

An extremely strong jet stream will steer a succession of low-pressure systems towards the UK over the next week, starting with Storm Ciara this weekend. Our confidence in the forecast means we have been able to issue severe weather warnings well in advance, giving people time to prepare for potential impacts of the storm.

Colchester Borough Council has issued the following advice:

Advice for Coping with High Winds and Gales

High winds and gales are major contributors to weather-related damage in the UK. You may find the following advice useful in keeping you, your family and property safe.

Before the storm

  • Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture or anything else that could be blown into windows or cause any damage.
  • Secure doors, garage doors, barn doors and windows, particularly if they face the direction of the wind coming in.
  • If possible, park any cars in a garage if available; otherwise keep them clear of buildings, fences, trees or anything else that could fall onto them.

During the storm

Stay indoors as much as possible, although if it is essential to go out:

  • Avoid walking close to buildings and trees.
  • Stay away from boundary walls and fences – if the integrity is compromised, they will collapse on the sheltered side.
  • Do not go outside to try and repair any damage whilst the storm is in progress.
  • If you must drive take care driving on exposed routes such as bridges, or high open roads, delay your journey or find alternative routes if possible.

After the storm

  • Continue to stay away from boundary walls as they may have been weakened.
  • Check in on vulnerable neighbours or relatives to see if they are safe and help them make arrangements for any repairs.
  • If you need to make an insurance claim, start documenting what has been damaged with pictures and notes.
