Downton AbbeySynopsis

Julian Fellowes, creator and writer of the television series, wrote Downton Abbey; Michael Engler directed it.

The film continues the storyline from the series, with much of the original cast returning. The film, set in 1927, depicts a visit by the King and Queen to Downton Abbey.  As the Royal staff descend on Downton, an assassin has also arrived and attempts to kill the monarch. The family and servants are pitted against the royal entourage; a particular problem is the Queen’s lady-in-waiting, who has fallen out with the Crawleys, especially the Dowager Countess, over an inheritance issue.

Trivia

The characters played by Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge) and Dame Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall) are at odds from the beginning. Umbridge gets things done her way by throwing around the names of powerful people with whom she has connections.  Their characters in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007) were also antagonists.
