Notice of Elections on May 4th 2023

May 4th 2023 is the date of the first GB elections requiring photo ID.

The Returning Officer of Colchester City Council has issued official Notice of elections. Affectionately known as ‘Star Wars day’ by some, the elections will take place on May 4th 2023. This affects the Lexden & Braiswick Ward of the City Council and, potentially, West Bergholt Parish Council.

Photo ID

Registered electors will need to show Photo ID (or Voter Authority Certificates as per 6 below), for the first time in Great Britain. The list of valid ID is long and with some idiosyncrasies as mentioned in this article.

Timetable

The following is the timetable of events with deadlines.

  1. Nomination papers must be delivered to the Returning Officer, Town Hall, High Street, Colchester CO1 1PJ on any working day, Monday to Friday, from the date of this notice between 9.30 am and 4.30 pm but no later than 4 pm on Tuesday 4th April 2023.
  2. Nomination papers may be obtained from the offices of the Returning Officer, Town Hall, High Street, Colchester CO1 1PJ, during the times stated above. Nomination forms are also available online: www.colchester.gov.uk/elections.
  3. If any election is contested the poll will take place on Thursday 4th May 2023.
  4. Applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 12 midnight on Monday 17th April 2023. Applications can be made online: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.
  5. Applications, amendments or cancellations of postal votes and amendments or cancellations of proxy votes must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5 pm on Tuesday 18th April 2023.
  6. Applications for a Voter Authority Certificate or an Anonymous Elector’s Document valid for this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5 pm on Tuesday 25th April 2023. Applications can be made online: www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate.
  7. Applications to vote by proxy at this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 5 pm on Tuesday 25th April 2023.
  8. Applications to vote by emergency proxy at this election must reach the Electoral Registration Officer a by 5 pm on Thursday 4th May 2023.
