Replacing Cherry Trees – Simple?

Bluebell planting pear tree

Writing this article I couldn’t, first of all, decide if it should be about Cherry Trees, Oak Trees, Pear Trees or Bluebells; it transpired they all had their part to play along with many others.  The Cherry trees graced Orpen Hall for decades; however, as they had become elderly and diseased, they had to be removed last year.

This is when Jakki Jenner stepped in, she worked for Oak View Landscapes and was offering a tree to the village in support of the Queens Jubilee Green Canopy.   Thoughts turned to when & how, for example what could replace the Cherry trees? Holme oaks were an early contender, but as Oak View, the Allotments & Gardeners discussed the project the final decision was to acquire four Ornamental Pear trees. Each of the three groups would sponsor one each, in addition the Orpen Hall Memorial Trust would sponsor the fourth.

Today Phase 1, Phase 2 in June

Today Oak View’s Managing Director, Paul Downer, having sourced four suitable specimens, turned up with colleagues to plant them.  Mark Jenner, Jakki’s husband, planted the tree that is being dedicated to her memory; members of the Parish Council and children from Bluebells Playschool also helped.  The children are now looking forward to getting some watering cans to ensure the new trees thrive. Many thanks to Oak View who gave their time & materials freely.

The Parish Council are arranging a ceremony for June to unveil Plaques; this will form part of the Jubilee celebrations.
