Review of 2021 Bowling Season at Woods
In their review of 2021, Woods Bowls Club recorded competitive success and growth in membership numbers!
Woods started playing competitive games against other clubs again in early May. Then the focus was on their annual open day, which this year was timed to coincide with Bowls England’s ‘Bowls Big Weekend’. The club even managed to feature on BBC Essex’s ‘The Quest’ on Sunday 23rd May by being the final destination; Barry & Liana made it in time to win their challenge!
Following this, the open day was a MASSIVE success with 50 people trying bowls out (they nearly ran out of Tea, cake and Bowls!) Around 30 people have now joined the club.
Competitive Update
The Men’s Triples team finished Runners-up in the Colchester Borough League. In the Colchester Borough Fours ‘A’ league, Woods’ Men’s’ team finished 5th out of 7 teams – maybe not that impressive on paper but this is the equivalent of surviving a season in the Premier League after coming up from the Championship – no mean feat.
In the Colchester Borough Knock out competitions, Woods got to the Semi-Final of the Team tournament and had semi-finalists in the Colchester Borough Pairs competition. To then top off a very good season one of their men won the Sudbury Open singles competition.
The club introduced new shirts this year which proved a fantastic hit. It was the first time Woods had all turned out in matching shirts. Next year all new members will also be wearing them.
Looking Forward
The green was ‘put to bed’ on Saturday 9th October. It will be cut once a month during the winter months and hopefully all the seed, fertilizer and soil that has been put on the green will produce a lovely surface to play on next year.
The club restarts in April next year if you fancy having a go. You can contact the club through their website or via their Facebook page. If you prefer to call the number is 01206 863854.
