Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 6th January 2013

Our Under 8s were up against Brooklands at home on the Poors Field.  A new year but unfortunately the same old problem for Bergholt Heath who continued to have their slow start to the game and by half-time they were 3-0 down.  The second half saw a much improved performance from the boys and with the defence standing firm this gave the midfield and forwards a chance to make some attacks missing from the first half.  Despite the pressure Bergholt could not find the back of the net and conceded another when a clearance rebounded off a Brooklands shin straight into the goal.  Final score 0-4.

The Under 10s were away to Wivenhoe Town in league cup action, and eased themselves into the next round with a comfortable 4-0 victory.

The Under 14s were at home in the league, to FC Clacton (Blues).   The game started in end to end fashion and some poor positional play saw the visitors take the lead after 5 minutes.   Bergholt huffed and puffed but were struggling to get their usual passing game going, and from another individual mistake after 15 minutes, Clacton went 2-0 up.   This finally spurred Bergholt into action and soon after they pulled a goal back courtesy of a scrambled effort from Sam Clark after the Clacton ‘keeper had given a free kick away for picking up a back pass.   Within 2 minutes Bergholt had equalised, again it was Sam Clark getting his head to a corner to head powerfully into the net.  Suddenly Bergholt were full of confidence and within a few minutes two quick fire goals from James Holden saw the half time score a respectable 4-2.   The second half was a much quieter affair with Bergholt in control.   The 5th and final goal coming from James Holden, who completed his hat-trick around 10 minutes from time.   Final score: Bergholt Heath 5-2 Brooklands.  Bergholt ‘man of the match’: Max Booth.

The Under 18s were also in league action, away to Feering Falcons, and ran out comfortable 6-2 winners.

Annual Seniors’ Lunch at St Mary’s

christmas decorationThis now famous Lunch will be served in the Church Hall on Saturday 19th January meeting at 12.30 for 1pm with plans to be finished by 3pm.  The Festive 2 course lunch with coffee and mints will be served by friends of the church and reservations are now being taken by Murray Harlow (07989 720 256); there is room for a maximum of 40 people so early booking is strongly recommended.

A donation for church funds is requested.  Bon appetit!

200 flock to Old Church

200 Flock to Old Church

On 16th December 2012 there wasn’t a seat or pew left in St. Mary’s Old Church. The annual Carol Service, which was organised jointly by West Bergholt Parish Church and the Friends of St. Mary’s Old Church, brought together well over two hundred people, many of whom had walked across the fields to the old church in the sunshine.

The service included contributions from the choir, led by Caroline Finlay accompanied by Mike Neish on the organ, with his assistant, Jon Smith manning the pump. Richard Chadborn and Michael Foster conducted the service.

Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 16th December 2012

Our Under 8s and Under 10s continue their mid-season break and will return to action on 6th January when the leagues resume.

The Under 14s played their final match before Christmas, away to Halstead Town.  Bergholt started brightly and within 5 minutes were winning 1-0 thanks to Owen Bernhardt who scored his first goal of the season after breaking the Halstead off side trap and racing through to finish one-on-one with the home ‘keeper.  Ten minutes and it was 2-0 when Ollie Sanderson crashed a free kick against the bar only for Max Booth to react quickest and head the ball into the goal.  Unfortunately rather than spurring the team on to greater things, scoring so early in the match saw Bergholt become a bit cocky and stop doing the simple things well, which allowed a physical Halstead team back into the match.  Just before half time a free kick on the right saw the ball swung into the Bergholt box for a Halstead player to head into the net unchallenged.  After a half time roasting by the manager, Bergholt came out for the second half in the same manner as the start of the first. A few minutes later there was an unsavoury moment when a home player caught a Bergholt midfielder with a high tackle above the knee which resulted in the player being helped off the pitch with a nasty cut on his leg. Although the referee gave a foul, he did not take any further action for a challenge that would have been a ‘straight red’ in professional football, which lead to a heated exchange of words between the referee and the injured player’s father, who ended up being sent from the touchline by the referee.  Play eventually resumed and Bergholt scored another goal almost straight from the kick off, courtesy of a second from Max after a long ball from Sam Clark. Soon it was 4-1 from a now fired up Bergholt team, Sam Clark getting the final touch in a goalmouth scramble from a corner.  Owen then helped himself to 2 more goals by beating a beleaguered Halstead off side trap, to complete his hat-trick.  Final score: Halstead 1-6 Bergholt Heath.  Bergholt Heath ‘man of the match’: Owen Bernhardt.

Our Under 18s also played their final match of 2012, away to Little Oakley Reds.  Unfortunately Bergholt  lost 4-1.

Conflict in the 19th Century Essex Countryside

This subject of the WEA’s next 10-week course is led by tutor, Ted Woodgate who intends to use Essex newspapers of the time to help investigate such areas as:

  • the drama of the West Bergholt fires,
  • the Swing riots,
  • the formation of a national farm workers’ union, and
  • the birth of political rights for rural workers.

The venue is the Methodist Hall in Chapel Lane CO6 3EF and the course starts on Tuesday 15th January 2013 at 8.00 pm.

Trees for Years – Free Trees

The 7th Trees for Years Initiative sponsored by OfficeIS will be held at Rowan House Council Offices Car Park off Sheepen Road between 10am -1pm.

Free trees will be given away to Borough Residents, Community Groups, Schools and Parish Council’s.  Residents can collect up to 3 plants per household and up to 20 per community group, School and Parish Council.

The following species will be available:

  • Raspberry canes
  • Blackcurrant canes
  • Gooseberry bush
  • Blackberry root
  • Acer campestre – Field Maple
  • Prunus padus – Bird Cherry
  • Betula pendula – Silver Birch
  • Corylus avellana – Hazel cob nut
  • Cornus alba ‘Siberica’ – Red Stem dogwood
  • Cornus stolonifera ‘Flaviramea’ – Yellow stem Dogwood

2013 bare root trees/fruit bushes will be available on a first come first serve basis:

  • Trees must be planted on private property and postcodes will be recorded to monitor the distribution.
  • Cultivation guidance will be available so that trees can be selected, taking into account the ultimate size and form of mature trees.
  • Remember to bring a large bag to put your trees in.

Bergholt Heath YFC – Results & Fixtures 2nd December 2012

A total blank for Bergholt Heath this weekend.  Both the Under 8s and the Under 10s are now enjoying their mid-season break and won’t have any matches until January.

The Under 14s were due to play Bures United on the Poors field, but on arrival at 9.45am the pitch was totally covered in a hard frost, in total contrast to Saturday morning when it was in surprisingly good condition.  The appointed referee did a pitch inspection just after 10am and decided to wait to see what impact the bright sun had on it, with a view to kicking off either on time at 10.30 or maybe by 11am latest.  However by 10.45am it was obvious that, an hour on, there had been little or no change since our arrival.  Therefore the referee postponed the match.

After further discussion with the referee and then our Under 18s manager, the Under 18’s match Vs FC Clacton, due to kick off at 2pm, was also postponed.
