West Bergholt’s Methodist Church Sold

Methodist Church Sold

The Methodist Church site was sold on Friday September 15th 2023 after a protracted and complex sale.  This was not helped by the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.

The final service in the West Bergholt Methodist Church as it was sold

Many villagers will recall the Methodist fellowship ceased to worship in West Bergholt in September 2018 some 139 years after the first service!  Membership had been declining for some time leading to the difficult decision to cease holding services in the Chapel.  The final service took place at the end of a weekend of activities and reminiscence.  The remaining members now worship at “The Well Methodist Church“, in Mile End.

Change of control

From this point, the site became the responsibility of the Methodist Church.  The Colchester Methodist Circuit handled the sale of the site..

Heart of methodists thoughts

Day 84 of (shopping) Lockdown

Day 84 is also day 3 of the Siege of Colchester some 372 years ago, that siege only lasted 77 days and here we are at day 84 of our COVID-19 siege.  With the shops reopening, are we at the beginning of the end, or the end of the beginning?  If we want it to be the former then I guess we need to stay alert?  Today is also the start of Loneliness Awareness Week, other news:

Methodist Church for saleMethodist Hall Open for Business

As the Methodist Church is put up for sale, the Methodist community in West Bergholt remind us that the Hall is still open for business.

Ongoing Hall Activity

The future of the site, including the hall, is dependent on who is interested in the site and what plans the ultimate buyer has for the site.  However, nothing is going to happen overnight and the Church anticipates that Continue reading “Methodist Hall Open for Business”

After 139 Years

Methodist Memories FlyerAfter 139 Years

After 139 years of Methodist Ministry in our Chapel in West Bergholt, and after much prayer and discussion among our members, a decision was made to cease Sunday worship at the end of August. With an ageing congregation and numbers falling we have sadly decided that it is no longer reasonable to continue regular Sunday morning services. The Colchester Circuit will be marketing the site for sale from September. We will continue our activities in the hall, as part of our outreach in the village, for as long as we are able.

Methodist Memories

We could not let this important decision go by without a special event.  To mark this we are holding a special weekend of “Methodist Memories” at the end of September, September 29/30. This will be a Continue reading “After 139 Years”

Methodist Church Services Change

Methodist Church Services Change

There is a change coming in the pattern of Sunday worship at the Methodist Church. Up to and including Easter Sunday, April 1st, worship will be continuing as usual on each Sunday at 11.00 am.

Starting on April 8th Sunday services will only be held on the second and fourth Sunday of the month. A different person will normally conduct these each time – this may be an ordained Minister or a Lay Preacher. Usually once a month a service of Holy Communion is part of the service.

Away Sundays

On Sundays when there is not a service at our church in the village, the church is setting up some lift-sharing arrangements to services at other Methodist churches within the Colchester Circuit. Please contact Judith, 01206 241969, or Andrew, 01206 242511, if you would like a lift. Full details of all these services will always be available in ‘The Link’.

All other activities are continuing as usual.
