Inspirational Tom, 19, passes away after raising £100,000 for charity

Inspirational Tom

THE PROUD family of a fun-loving teenager have praised their “phenomenal” son.

Tom Bowdidge, 19, died on Friday. He had been diagnosed with a rare, aggressive stomach cancer last summer.  While undergoing treatment the West Bergholt resident raised £100,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust.  As well as shaving off his hair for the charity, he organised fundraising events and even featured on a song to raise awareness.

Proud parents Nikki and Richard Bowdidge and sister Emma were at his side when he passed away on Friday.

Mum Nikki said:

I asked him what we were going to do without him and he said ‘you’re going to crack on’.

We were privileged to be able to say goodbye to him.

The fact we were able to hold his hand when he took his last breath, there’s something comforting in that, that we talked him through it.

Tom had come to terms with it, he was at peace. He said ‘we have been dealt these cards and now we have got to get on with it’.

There was one clear message when Tom was feeling poorly, he said ‘I never want to see it written I lost my battle with cancer.  I haven’t lost anything, it no longer has a body to live in so the cancer committed suicide’.

Tom’s final wishes were that we were to ‘crack on’ and we are going to endeavor to do that.

Tom, a former Colchester Royal Grammar School sixth-former, was at work last summer when he collapsed.  Doctors initially thought he had appendicitis.  Less than 24 hours later they broke the news he had a large tumour in his abdomen.  He underwent several lengthy bouts of chemotherapy, all the time continuing to fundraise.

Teenage Cancer Trust has ringfenced the money Tom has raised to spend on refurbishing the ward where he received his treatment, at University College London Hospital.

Dad Richard said:

We are overwhelmingly proud of Tom and couldn’t be more so.

I’m going to carry on fundraising. From my perspective Tom’s legacy is that the work and support the Teenage Cancer Trust provided Tom and us with carries on for other people who go through this, no matter what road they take.

He got to see the plans and even put his own influence on them, which meant a lot to him.

Tom’s funeral will be held at St Mary the Virgin Church, West Bergholt, on Wednesday, October 30 at noon.

Everyone has been asked to wear a hint of blue, Tom’s favourite colour.

Nikki added:

Tom often used to say ‘carpe diem’. And he’s right, you should seize the day.

Tom’s legacy is also about not worrying what the future holds, living every day for today.

He was absolutely phenomenal.

Since Tom’s death wellwishers have gone to his fundraising page to donate in his memory.

Tom Bowdidge – sadly missed

Firstly this week it is with great sadness that Bergholt Heath has to report that one of our ex-players, Tom Bowdidge, passed away on Friday morning after a brave fight against cancer, at just 19 years old. Tom will be greatly missed by all those that knew him around the village and beyond.  As a mark of respect all three Bergholt Heath teams wore black armbands during this weekend’s matches.  Tom started a cancer charity “Teens Against Cancer Baby” last year and spent the last year of his life bravely raising money for his charity at every opportunity. Should anyone wish to donate to the charity in Tom’s memory, please visit http://www.justgiving.com/Tom-Bowdidge.

The following message is on Tom’s Facebook page (linked above and from picture):

We have organised Tom’s funeral now. It will be on Wednesday 30th October at 12 noon in St Mary the Virgin Church, New Church Road, West Bergholt, Colchester, CO6 3JF.  It was Tom’s wish that he had a massive funeral so we would be delighted to welcome as many of you as are able to attend.  We would like it to be a time when we mourn his loss but also celebrate his life. Dress code will be dark but we hope people will wear a touch of blue which was Tom’s favourite colour.
With our love as always xxxx

On to the football:

Brooklands vsBHYFC Under 9s

Bergholt Heath Under 9s faced their toughest game of the season today against unarguably the best team in the league, Brooklands.

Before the game started the Bergholt team put on black armbands in respect of Tom. After the torrential rain that preceded it, the game kicked off in sunshine and began brightly for both teams with Bergholt matching the hosts for possession.  Brooklands then started to take charge of the game, but try as they might they could not break through the Bergholt defence with the boys battling for everything and if they did get any shots on target, then Daniel’s handling was faultless.

For all their performance Bergholt fell behind with a well-taken goal.  This didn’t get the boys disheartened and they tried to get back on level terms and Thomas L, with his usual once-a-game long range effort, came close to finding the net but the keeper got down well for the save. With the half-time whistle imminent, Brooklands went further ahead when a powerful long range fizzed right through a crowded penalty area and with Daniel unsighted, found the corner of the Bergholt net.  HT 0-2.

As with the first half, the beginning was fairly even with Bergholt almost getting on the score sheet but James’ effort was just held by the Brooklands keeper.  However, minutes 30-36 will be 6 minutes that Bergholt will want to forget.  Once again, Bergholt’s luck deserted them as Brooklands extended their lead when a deflected shot caught out an unlucky Daniel.  From this, another 3 goals rattled in quick succession as Brooklands tried their luck from outside the box – each shot gave Daniel no chance.  The last 4 minutes, Bergholt managed to regroup themselves and see the game out without further loss.  FT 0-6. Although Brooklands were the better team and deserved their win, the scoreline was particularly harsh on Bergholt who played really well.  Credit should go to the defence today who were superb and didn’t deserve to be on the end of that scoreline.

Bergholt Heath player of the match: Thomas Lloyd – a captain’s performance with some excellent tackling and energy.

BHYFC UNder 11s vs Halstead Town Reds

The Under 11s were the only team at home this week and comfortably beat Halstead Town Reds 5-1 with goals coming from Jonah Murray and Richard Frost with two each and one more from Tyler Webb.

Stanway Rovers vs BHYFC Under 15s

Following last weeks league cup win, the Under 15s were in round two action of the Essex Cup, but luckily  – with the whole of Essex to be drawn against – their away match was only a couple of miles up the road to play Stanway Rovers, their local rivals in the A league!

Bergholt started slowly, which seems to be a trend so far this season, and in the first 10 minutes they allowed the home side to have several tester shots at goal – but luckily Connor comfortably handled anything that came his way.  Just before the quarter of an hour mark Bergholt got forward to create something for the first time in the match.   Stanway gave away a free kick on the left, Ollie Sanderson played the ball diagonally into the box, James Holden got a flick on and Sam Clark finished at the far post – only to find that the linesman had raised his flag!

However Bergholt were not to be denied and within a minute another attack saw a corner conceded and Sam rose high at the far post to loop his header back over the Stanway ‘keeper and into the roof of the net.  These two quick fire attacks and the goal spurred Bergholt into life and they restricted the hosts to long range attempts for the rest of the half.  Half time: Stanway Rovers 0 -1 Bergholt Heath

The second half started in completely the opposite manner to the first and within 2 minutes Bergholt were further ahead.  Leo Tiffney picked the ball up centrally just outside the Stanway area.  Owen Bernhardt ran in from the right and called for the ball to be played through, Leo picked him out superbly and Owen comfortably slotted the ball into the far corner.  A brilliantly worked goal.  Within 2 minutes Bergholt scored their third goal.  James chased a long ball into the left of the area and under his pressure the defender handled the bouncing ball. Penalty.  With Ollie now off the pitch resting having been ill during the week, Captain Jamie Bowden took the spot kick and sent the ‘keeper the wrong way to score his now customary goal against Stanway Rovers.

The game was now being controlled by Bergholt, however the hosts got on the score sheet with around 10 minutes remaining.  An attack was cleared into the midfield but was stopped by an alert Stanway player who immediately played it back.  The ball evaded the Bergholt midfielders and as Sam came across to cover the obvious gap, the striker flicked it though to his partner who had the run on the blind side of Jamie and he finished well as Connor tried to close the angle. However this was the one and only clear cut opportunity for the hosts and Bergholt saw the match out comfortably to move into round three of the Essex cup, when they will be at home to the Romford Flyers.  Final score: Stanway Rovers 1 – 3 Bergholt Heath.  Bergholt man of the match: Jamie Bowden.

Village Bulletin Annual Quiz

The Quiz Night organised by the Village Bulletin Team was held in September and was a great success, with twelve teams entering.  They were all from local organisations or a groups of friends, as the criteria for entry is that at least part of the team must be residents of West Bergholt.

The quizmaster was Susan Leng who also wrote the questions.  Some teams surprised themselves with how much they knew on certain subjects – and when they did well, they wished they had played their joker, which  doubles the team’s points in that round!  However, each team distinguished themselves in some way and the team with two teenagers congratulated themselves on having someone who knew an answer about  “Grand Theft Auto V”.

Quiz in aid of Teenage Cancer TrustBernard Colbron, editor of the Bulletin, kept the scoreboard up to date.  Other members of the team ably assisted with marking, and distributing answer sheets as well as refreshments and a big raffle.  With two extra helpers the evening ran very smoothly, and, thanks to the Parish Council who kindly allowed the use of the Orpen Hall free, the evening raised £270 for “The Teenage Cancer Trust” which is very dear to the hearts of many people in West Bergholt.

The final winners, after a closely run contest, who went home with the Challenge Cup, were  The Orpen Players.   They were also the previous winners – will they make it a hat-trick next year ?  The runner-up  prize went to a family team from Albany Road – they too are determined to capture the cup next year !    Come along and join us next time, and see if you can be “The Brains of Bergholt”

Bergholt Heath Youth Football ClubBergholt Heath YFC – Results 6th & 13th October

Apologies for two weeks’ combined reports this week, hopefully normal service will be resumed next week.

6th October – Colchester Villa Yellows vs BHYFC Under 9s

Bergholt Heath Under 9s made the short journey to the Gilberd to play league newcomers Colchester Villa Yellows this week.  The hosts made the brighter start and put the Bergholt defence under pressure and they nearly scored when it would have been harder to miss. Miss they did as the hard pitch caught the striker out and the ball bobbled at the wrong time and his mis-cued effort hit the post.  Bergholt, spurred by this let off, went on the attach themselves and Oliver’s long range lob nearly deceived the Villa ‘keeper who managed to claw the ball out just before it bounced into the top corner.

The game was free-flowing with both teams pushing for the opening goal – Oliver again and Thomas L coming close for Bergholt before the deadlock was finally broken. The ball was crossed into the Bergholt box which they failed to clear and the Villa striker slotted the ball past Daniel.  The hosts then had the chance to double their lead when they had a free kick on the edge of the area.  The ball was well hit but Daniel did exceptionally well to push the ball onto the crossbar.  Bergholt were determined to hit back but just as they got clear through on goal the referee blew of half time.

At half time the Bergholt manager told the boys just how well they had fought back last week and that they had to do the same again.  They did that and had the balance of the second half.  Bergholt had the ball in the back of the Villa net but the referee blew his whistle to stop the game for an injury just before the ball went over the line – the second time Bergholt’s luck had run out. Try as they may, Bergholt could not find a way through and no more goals were scored.

Bergholt Heath player of the match: Oliver Baker – some excellent long range efforts and a great midfield battling performance.

13th October – BHYFC Under 9s vs Oyster Youth

Bergholt Heath Under 9s were back on home soil after three weeks on the road. The goals and pitch were prepared in heavy rain but it stopped just before kick-off. The pitch itself was wet and in the warm-ups the ball was zipping along the ground giving the keepers extra to think about……

From the kick-off, Bergholt started the brighter of the two teams continuing to pass the ball around well as they had the previous two weeks. Oyster Youth stood firm and the half looked like it would end goalless. However, a break from Bergholt saw Tommy get free from the Oyster defence and his powerful shot whizzed past the stranded keeper. Bergholt looked to stretch that lead further when Theo tried his luck from distance but his lob just cleared the crossbar. Oyster were still in the game and got a heavy slice of luck when from a corner and despite the best efforts of Daniel to stop it, the ball was turned into his own net by the unfortunate Billy at the near post. HT 1-1.

With the rain still holding off, the second half kicked off with the visitors slightly on the ascendancy. They got another slice of luck when a long range shot squeezed under the body of Daniel and just rolled over the line before he clawed it away. With their tails up, Oyster then stretched their lead further when a couple of minutes later the striker got free of his marker and slammed the ball into the back of the net. Despite these setbacks the Bergholt team continued to press and try to get back into the game. Daniel made up for his mistake with a fantastic catch from a free kick whilst long range efforts were the name of the game with various team members all having a go. However, they were either going just wide of the post or into the keeper’s arms and even when he was beaten, the defender cleared off of the line. FT score 1-3.

Bergholt Heath player of the match: Billy Sutton – another solid game from the Aldham Ace!

6th October – Feering Falcons Reds vs BHYFC Under 11s

The Under 11s were also away, at Feering Falcons Reds, and started the game as if they were still on their school holidays!  Within a few minutes the players decided that rather than tackle they would let the home forward run through and score.  Things were not helped when Bergholt  cleared their box but the referee stopped play. It was unclear why he had blown his whistle – and even more puzzling when he gave Feering a penalty, which was scored.  Things were not looking any better going forward, with miss-placed passes, but then Bergholt pulled a goal back just before half time when Matthew headed forward to Jonah who put it away.

The second half started much better and Bergholt equalised when a shot from Matthew bobbled its way past the keeper.  Although Bergholt were still not playing too well, they were battling much better and were having far more shots than the home team but most were going wide or high.  However the Feering keeper did make one excellent save. Bergholt scored what seemed to be a good goal but it was ruled out for off side, although the boys insisted afterwards that the cross went backwards not forwards – which is likely given the number of incorrect throw in and offside decisions given during the game. Feering were not out of the game though, and from a poor clearance they scored what proved to be the winner when a shot back at goal hit the underside of the bar and spun into the net to make the final score Feering Falcons Reds 3 – 2 Bergholt Heath.

Bergholt ‘s man of the match: Nathan.

13th October – Wivenhoe vs BHYFC Under 11s  (League Cup)

After last weeks horror show this was a complete turnaround in performance terms for the Under 11’s, away to Wivenhoe in the League Cup. Bergholt only had nine for this cup match but all of the boys had a great game. Wivenhoe started the better but Bergholt managed to curtail them. Indeed after a great through ball from Tyler Bergholt should have taken the lead. Jonah just had the keeper to beat, but then suddenly pulled up. One of the players called offside and, rather than listening for the whistle, he stopped. Harvey made a couple of great saves to keep the scores level. Ben and Alex playing at full backs were having fantastic games with some excellent counter attacking clearances. Bergholt were passing far better this match and the tackling was much better with Dan working hard at centre back. A small lapse in concentration led to the away team going into the break one down.

The second half was even better, with the midfield putting several great balls through to Tyler and Jonah. Jonah latched onto one and thumped it in to make it level GOOOAAALLL!!!  Bergholt should have taken the lead but Jo and Ty when clean through several times hesitated just a tad too long instead of pulling the trigger. The guys at the back worked hard and restricted Wivenhoe’s chances. Full time 1-1 and onto extra time.

The first half was a bit of stalemate in midfield but the second half saw a couple of chances as both teams went for it to avoid penalties. Again Bergholt had a half chance but failed to convert and with a couple of minutes to go, a goal mouth me-lee saw the ball rebound off the post for a Wivenhoe player to score the winner. A great game by both sides and a fantastic performance by the boys.

MOM went to Alex for a terrific display.

6th October – FC Clacton vs BHYFC Under 15s

Our Under 15s completed the hat-trick of away fixtures.  After last week’s first win of the season at East Thurock United (CYFL) in the Essex Cup, coming from a goal down to win 2-1 with goals from Ben and Max, they were away to FC Clacton this week.

As there was a full squad for the first time this season, a new team photo was taken, but after a delayed kick off Bergholt got off to a very slow start and fell a goal behind early on. However the equaliser came quickly when a handball resulted in a free kick on the edge of Clacton’s area that Sam fired into the bottom right hand corner.
Whilst not playing well, Bergholt did manage to get quite a few crosses in the box although none found any players in blue. However Bergholt fell behind again midway through the half when a free kick was cleared and the follow up shot was blocked only for it to fall kindly for an unmarked player to shoot from 20 yards out and find the top corner.

Bergholt looked a bit shell shocked and within 10 minutes Clacton made it 3-1 when they latched onto an under hit attempt to head back to Connor and they scored again.

The half time whistle came and the Clacton players and management seemed confident that the points were in the bag against a Bergholt team that looked 2nd to everything and had no answers as to how to turn it around. How wrong they were.  After a team talk that wasn’t quite a Fergie’s Hairdryer, but stern enough to let the lads know that the 1st half performance was not good enough and after a bit of a shake up, they went out for the second half in determined fashion.

Within 10 minutes Ollie played a through ball to James Holden and he sped away then coolly beat the Clacton keeper to reduce the deficit. Bergholt were flying now and allowed Clacton no time on the ball smothering most attacks before they developed. It wasn’t too long before James returned the compliment, squaring the ball for Ollie to score through a crowded penalty box and the game was level.  The subs went on again and continued the hard work of those that they replaced and it looked certain that James had scored another as he hit a screamer that was heading for the top left hand corner only for the keeper to acrobatically tip the ball over at full stretch. An incredible save!

With around 10 minutes to go Mickey went on a mazy run down the left wing beating 3 or 4 players before cutting the ball back to Luke who’s shot took a kind deflection and nestled in the bottom left corner to make the score 4-3 and put Bergholt in front!

Bergholt had completed a remarkable comeback and showed exactly what they are capable of when the everyone plays at 100% and work hard together as a team. It wasn’t just the closing down and winning the ball back that won the game though, some of the football played in that second half was excellent.

All 16 were excellent for the 2nd half and they deserve a lot of credit, however Man of the match was Mickey, mainly for his jinking run and assist, but he also had a solid game at left back too.

13th October – BHYFC UNder 15s vs Rowhedge Juniors (League Cup)

Our Under 15s were at home, also in the League Cup Round 1, against C league Rowhedge Juniors.  In a first half characterised by strong wind and driving rain, Bergholt lost the toss and had to play against the conditions. Against lower league opposition, Bergholt were given time and space on the ball and with a better final ball into the box, even against the wind and rain, they should have been comfortably ahead by half time.  As it was, the only goal of the first half was via a penalty after Luke had been taken out by the visiting ‘keeper when clean through on goal.  Ollie stepped up to coolly finish from the spot.

The second half saw the sun come out and the wind drop – just as the Bergholt boys were looking to enjoy the advantage of the conditions!  Bergholt were much more direct this half and a relatively one sided match saw further goals from James – a shot into the far corner after cutting in from the left, Luke from a tight angle – also from the left, Owen with a shot under the ‘keeper and finally from Max in the last couple of minutes from just inside the area.  Connor in the Bergholt goal was relatively untroubled all match. Final score: Bergholt Heath 5 – 0 Rowhedge Juniors.

Bergholt Heath man of the match; Birthday boy Sam Clark.

Next weeks fixtures Sunday 20th October:

  • Brooklands vs Under 9
  • Under 11 vs Halstead Town Reds, KO 10am

SpeedWatch Report

Community Speed WatchSpeedwatch Report

Many readers will know that  West Bergholt have a SpeedWatch Group.  This is a group of volunteers, trained by the police to use an approved radar speed device.  Members are able to go, at a convenient time, to approved sites and monitor the speeds of the traffic.  Any motorist exceeding a threshold speed has their vehicle details written down, with time and date, and this is passed to Essex Police.  The keeper of the vehicle will then receive a letter from the Police asking them to obey the speed limits in future.  The Police state:

“Persistent high violators will be targeted by Essex Police resulting in prosecution.”

Intimidating

Many people have been concerned about the speed of traffic along the B1508, Colchester Road, and Lexden Road in particular.  Lorries and other large vehicles can be particularly intimidating where the footpaths are so narrow. Most of these vehicles are not exceeding the speed limit, but even then they create frightening turbulence.

The rail company paints yellow lines on the platform, to separate people from the trains.  Most of our footpaths are not wide enough to allow such a gap.  The B1508, Colchester-Bures Road in West Bergholt has similar issues.  Many people also complain about the skip lorries.  Again most of these are within the limit, but when we went at 6 am on September 30th, the first one we saw was doing 44 mph, in a 30 mph limit!  Miraculously all the others were within the limit.

Town Event for SpeedWatch

A Town event was held in Colchester on 18th September 2013, which involved several speedwatch groups.  I would like to share with you the final results for the day;

Road Safety staff gave advice and showed education videos to 51 offenders at enforcement sites, 300 people on community wheels outside the Town Hall with road safety staff and staff from the fire brigade giving advice, and 66 drivers were recorded traveling between 36 mph and 49 mph in Fingringhoe, Langenhoe, Peldon and West Bergholt by your local Community SpeedWatch Teams who conducted 5 sessions during the day.

One resident reported to me that their cat had been killed by a speeding and hit-and-run driver.  It could easily be a child or an old person next time!

Nuisance to drivers?

If you are a motorist who regularly speeds and thinks we are a nuisance, I would just ask you to do a simple experiment.  Try driving within the speed limit and see how much longer it takes.  Inevitably we have to slow for junctions and traffic lights, so the actual maximum speed has a surprisingly small effect on total journey time.

If you would like to come and join us, please let me know, so that you can receive the police training. Once trained members can go when they are able to find another volunteer(s) to join them.

Heating Oil Club

Delivery of Heating OilPeople who rely on oil for heating their homes are over a barrel (as it were) when it comes to negotiating terms with oil suppliers. The Parish Council has received an invitation for villagers to join an oil club.

The OIL CLUB is an independent organisation and has no links to any of the suppliers. The club’s aim is simple to reduce the cost of heating oil for members and reduce the environmental impact as much as possible. By grouping deliveries to a village area and the bulk buying ability of the OIL CLUB, they are able to negotiate the best purchase price for heating oil and pass this on to their members. The club works best with as many members as possible.

The aim is that a village will have only one oil tanker delivery to a number of homes on the same day rather than many deliveries to individual households on different days.

The OIL CLUB has launched a club for West Bergholt. If you would like to join or find out more about the club, you can visit the website:

The benefits are:

  • Reduced oil heating costs,
  • Reduced heavy vehicle traffic in the village,
  • Reduced carbon exhaust into the environment.
