Mulled Wine, Mince Pies and Candlelit Carols are on offer as the Friends of St Mary’s resume their normal programme.

Extensive external renovations affecting the tower and the 2 dormer windows and roof repairs have now been fully completed.  The next phase of internal redecorations is now likely to start in Spring 2019.  This means that the church is open for use allowing the Friends to organise two seasonal events:

Taking place between 11:30 am – 1:30 pm on Sunday 9th December, soft drinks, coffee and other savoury eats will also be on offer.  The event also affords an opportunity to take out or renew membership (just £5 a family), and to buy Christmas Cards of the church.  There is no charge for this event but you are welcome to offer a donation.

Candlelit Service

The ever-popular Candlelit Carol Service resumes on Sunday 16th December at 2:30 pm.  You are reminded that there is no heating, so dress warm, and that a cushion makes the service more comfortable.  All are welcome.

Update on Reopening Concert

This concert which featured the Comrie Singers, Jubilant Brass and The 3 Saxes was very well attended and raised £100’s, the Friends are planning to run another concert next year.

The number 11 bus service (Colchester-Highwooods Circular) operates Monday to Friday with financial support from ECC.  ECC are considering amending the Monday – Friday timetable and is carrying out a public consultation regarding this proposal between 28 November 2018 and 02 January 2019.

Four Footpaths Named in Honour of the Fallen

The Local History Group is proud to announce that, after 6 months of discussion and planning, four footpaths have been named with a ‘Memorial’ sign at each end of the paths.  Each of the signs includes the word MEMORIAL.  They mark the commemoration of the centenary of the end of the Great War; in particular the fact that over 170 villagers joined the British Forces of which at least 27 made the ultimate sacrifice. Wild Flowers of Essex

West Bergholt Gardeners recently enjoyed an interesting talk by Dr. Chris Gibson about “Wild Flowers of Essex”.  Chris drew on his 30+ year career as a nature conservationist, working to preserve Essex wildlife and landscapes.  The Gardeners learnt about the large areas of ancient woodland around the county (which includes Hillhouse Wood) and the flowers and plants which flourish there.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again

The West Bergholt Film Club is showing the movie Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again on Saturday 1st December.  Taking place in the Orpen Hall, doors open at 7 pm for showtime at 7:30 pm. Refreshments will be available.

Battle’s Over – West Bergholt’s Tribute to the Millions

Over 150 people from the village gathered on the evening of 11th November to play their part in a nationwide “Battle’s Over” commemoration.  This nationwide event was marking the ending of the 1st World War 100 years ago.

The commemoration saw a common theme being played out in urban and rural areas, towns, villages and cities.  Collectively a 1000 buglers were sounding the Last Post, over 1000 beacons of light being ignited;  a similar number of Cathedral and Church bells also rung out.
