The West Bergholt Volunteer of the Year 2023/24 is a new Community Award. It will be presented to an individual volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the village of West Bergholt, its residents, or just one resident. That person will have demonstrated exceptional commitment to an unpaid activity.

Speedwatch – Call for VolunteersAnthony Robins, the local Speedwatch Coordinator, is issuing a call for volunteers. Speedwatch is a group of volunteers from West Bergholt and EAG who regularly go out and monitor the speed of the traffic on some local roads. Did you get a new GoPro or Dash Cam for Christmas?A GoPro or Dash Cam could go a long way to help Road Safety in the village and elsewhere under a new scheme. The Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) is encouraging road users to submit footage showing dangerous road user behaviour. Thoughtless Parking at Poor’s LandAffecting children at Heathlands, Bergholt Heath YFC and the general public at large, thoughtless parking at the Poor’s Land Gate is a problem. The Parish Council contracts with Countrywide to maintain this land; last week they tried to gain access on 3 occasions but were unable to do so.
Without maintenance the land may cease to be fit for purpose depriving our youth and fellow villagers of a much-loved facility.
With ample parking available at Orpen Hall & Church car parks, all just a short walk, there really is no excuse.
This is just the latest in a series of parking concerns over the past year or so. Remember you can help address this by reporting parking, even speeding, issues using Trygve. This app (iOS or Android), allows you to take a picture, record the location and record details of incidents which are then reviewed. There is an active group you can join and see what others are reporting – West Bergholt Road Violations.
The Traffic Safety Plan Group met on 5th January and discussed a range of actions and initiatives including trygve, yellow lines, parking opportunities, school travel arrangements, VAS on Lexden Rd and an upcoming workshop event on 25th February.

Improving traffic safety in our villages and schools can take some time but West Bergholt Parish Council has shown it is worth the effort. Over a three-year period the village produced and introduced a Traffic Safety Plan. It did this working in partnership with Essex County Council, Heathlands primary school and village residents.
