Allotments Excel at Fundraising in 2017

The recent Allotment Committee meeting minutes disclose lots of news but none as staggering as their fundraising efforts.  Through their charity stall they have so far raised £4,250, nearly £2,000 more than last year!  There is still time to add to the total since the stall remains open until first frost.

The agreed recipients were confirmed as: Continue reading “Allotments Excel at Fundraising in 2017”

Annual Village Fete

After the success of the Queen’s Birthday Celebrations many people felt that it was time to resurrect the West Bergholt Annual Village Fete.  We can envisage an event taking place some time around the August Bank Holiday weekend, based in the Orpen Hall and on the Lorkin Daniell Field offering:

  • Stalls,
  • Games,
  • Veg/Flower Shows,
  • Competitions,
  • Music,
  • Food,
  • Your idea here?

Would you like to be involved in organising an Annual West Bergholt Fete?

Do you have ideas about what the Fete could consist of?

Do you know someone else who might?

Then come along to the first Village Fete Working Party meeting on Monday 14th November at 7.30pm in the John Lampon Hall, Lexden Road.

Anyone welcome! All ideas appreciated!

This will not be in competition with the School’s Summer Fayre, the PTA are keen to be involved, as they were for the QEII 90th Celebrations.

Vacant Allotments – Grow Your Own

As a new growing year approaches a small number of plots have become available to let to village residents.  The standard price is £16 per year for up to a 5 rod plot with concessions for those over 60, and starter plots are available.

The benefits of joining over eighty other village residents are:

  • Reduce weekly household costs by growing your own fruit and vegetables.
  • Enjoy organically produced produce.
  • Benefit from West Bergholt fresh air and exercise.
  • Make new friends and enjoy the company of fellow plot holders.
  • (See more below)

The downsides are:

  • The battle against the weather and pests.
  • The need for a regular commitment of a few hours a week.

For further details you can visit the Association’s webpage on this site or contact Terry Claydon by phone 01206 242124/07902332085 or email [antibot mailto=”[email protected]”].

Support is available through a “buddies” scheme for those with limited experience in growing fruit and vegetables.

Further Benefits of Allotment Gardening

The National Allotment Society adds more, for example:

  • 30 minutes of gardening can burn around 150 calories, this is teh same as low impact aerobics,
  • 15 minutes (fair skinned) to 90 minutes (darker-skinned) a day can build levels of Vitamin D,
  • creates a wildlife habitat maintaining biodiversity.

“Grow your own” sound good?

Wondering what a Rod is?
Wikipedia says:

The rod is a unit of length equal to 5½ yards, 16½ feet or 1⁄320th of a statute mile. Since the adoption of the international yard on 1 July 1959, it has been equivalent to exactly 5.0292 meters. A rod is the same length as a perch or a pole. In old English, the term lug is also used

Then you will be pleased to hear that at the start of a new growing season a few allotment plots have become available.

Most are five rod plots for which the annual rent is £15 or £9 for over 60s.  A few half size Taster Plots for newcomers are also available.

This is a good time to take up growing your own vegetables and if anyone new to the practice needs help there are plenty of seasoned gardeners to offer advice.
