Invitation To Enjoy Music, Mulled Wine & Mince Pies

This coming Sunday, 26th November, the Friends of St Mary’s Old Church invite you to enjoy ‘lunchtime’ Mulled Wine & Mince Pies with them. This is a free event and all are welcome between 11 am – 1 pm in the Old Church on Hall Road (CO6 3DU). This is also an opportunity to view the Mediaeval Paintings.

You might also want to take a winter walk before or after, if so you might want to check this history walk out on this website.

Fundraising

Mediaeval Painting

The Friends would be happy to receive donations, of course. This will help them with the maintenance of the Church and Grounds. In recent years they have received great support from the Churches Conservation Trust who funded significant structural repairs. There still remains, though, much work to be done including expensive conservation costs for the mediaeval paintings.

Decorating Won’t Stop Christmas Events

Christmas Events at Old ChurchOld Church redecorations - they will not stop Christmas events taking place

The Friends of St Mary’s are pleased to report that their regular Christmas events will still go ahead this year.

As you may have noticed, work started a week ago on the redecoration of the Old Church.  The Friends’ Keep the Bell Ringing appeal of 2016 raised money towards the repair of the roof and tower to make the structure watertight.  The Churches Conservation Trust, of course, also helped a lot with that project.  Now the internal redecoration work, using Continue reading “Decorating Won’t Stop Christmas Events”

Old Church Update – Ongoing Work and Mulled Wine

Scaffolding around Old ChurchOld Church Update – Mulled Wine & Mince Pies

The Friends of St Mary’s Old Church can report that the repair work being carried out at St. Mary’s Old Church is underway. Unfortunately the church will not be open again until the work is finished; this is unlikely to be before mid-January 2018. The Churches Conservation Trust builders have found more decay in the belfry than they had hoped, so they and the architects are deciding on the best way to proceed.

NO Carol Service BUT…

Because of the ongoing building works, the Friends regret there will be NO Carol Service  this Christmas.  They will, however, be holding their usual Mulled Wine and Mince Pies gathering on Saturday 2nd December, 11am – 1pm in the NEW Church Hall.

As well as the mulled wine, there will be coffee, soft drinks and sausage rolls.  There will also be an opportunity to renew membership of the Friends’ group to help maintain the church and churchyard.  This is just £5 per family.

A new selection of Old Church Christmas cards will also be available to buy, and a display of photographs of the work being done at the Old Church will be on show.

Entrance is free. The Friends hope to see you there!

Mulled Wine to Keep the Bell Ringing

The Friends of St Mary’s invite you to join them for mulled wine, mince pies and refreshments at the Old Church.  Taking place between 12-2:30pm on Sunday 11th December the event is a social occasion to meet friends, chat and look at the decorated Christmas trees.   You could also become a member (or renew your membership) of the Friends of St Mary’s Old Church. All are welcome, no admission charge but donations gratefully received.  Any funds raised will go towards the urgently needed repairs discussed in a previous article on this site.

Christmas Cards

The friends are also selling packs of Christmas Cards featuring the Old Church in wintry scenes.  Costing £3.50 you can buy the cards from Scissorhands, the Pharmacy or directly from Teresa (241878) or Jane (240167).
