The Local Story of Lancaster DV177

The Local Story of Lancaster DV177

The subject of the History Group‘s next meeting is all about the fate of an RAF Lancaster Bomber, DV177.  Taking place in the Orpen Hall on February 14th, Michael Foster will provide an insight into “The Local Story of Lancaster DV 177”.

Lancaster Bombers were very important during World War 2 and DV 177 was returning from a raid when it tried to make an emergency landing at Boxted Airfield in Langham.  After research by a number of Colchester people a memorial to the crew was dedicated in 2012 and a film recording the event was made by members of Colchester Film Makers, who have allowed Michael to include some selected excerpts.  You are invited to join us for what will be an interesting talk (Members £2 and Visitors £3).

January’s Meeting Report

The History Group Chairman, Peter Noakes, gave a very interesting talk “West Bergholt: Local history from our Archives” in January.  Using extracts from a number of publications produced by past members of the group Peter showed how West Bergholt had grown and changed since the Norman Conquest.  The Group is gradually finding its way through the substantial archive of material and if you are interested in helping please contact a member of the committee. After the talk members and visitors got the chance to look through some of the documents, maps and pictures from our collection.

Daniell Brewery Workers

One interesting item brought in by an audience member was a news cutting showing staff from Daniell’s Brewery.  The length of service of these men ranges from 25 to 50 years making a grand total of 553 years.

Unfortunately, the cutting is not dated although it is thought it may be from the mid-1920s; if you can add any information about this remarkable picture please contact the History Group Secretary Gill Poole:
